The fact that Pascal Martine is a real expert in the field of sacred choral music shows once again in the 'Three Motets' for mixed a-cappella choir (SATB) by the Mainz-based composer and (choir) teacher. The three sacred motets on verses by the English bishop and hymn writer Reginald Heber (1783-1826) are characterized by a very individual dense and atmospheric musical language. Thus, they musically dwell on the contemplative character of the three English-language poems perfectly which is typical especially of the two prayers 'Evening Hymn' and 'O most merciful'. The four-part songs are mainly homophonic and perfect for church services.

The three Latin Motets from the late 1880s have long been a standard repertoire of British choirs and have often been recorded on CD. And yet, although the Anglo-Irish composer Charles Villiers Stanford is no longer unknown in Germany, they remain an insider's tip. The motets are true miniatures of a cappella music. Due to their fine motivic structure, effective antiphonal groupings, and clear harmonics, they produce tremendous sound effects in a small space. Separate editions are available.

This rich corpus of texts from Donne, Blake (from Milton), and Vaughan, provides Hoddinott with a colorful treasury from which he masterfully sets these three accompanied motets. The organ accompaniments take on an equal partnership with the choral parts in developing the dramatic musical visions. The motets may be performed separately or as a set.

The composer wrote of his work as follows: The text of the three motets takes three motifs from the story of the birth of Jesus: (1) the joy of the Magi at seeing the Star, (2) Mary s cradle song as she rocks the Baby, and (3) the choir of Angels praising the joyful news in song. The movements may also be performed singly, but it is best for them to be heard together as a cycle. Their style and tonal system are marked by modulating modality .

One of three motets for various seasons, O Sacred Head is a gracious challenge to the more advanced choir. While all voices have parts of great expressiveness, the tenor line leads many of the long phrases. The writing is chromatic and somber in tone, reflecting the spirit of the text. This anthem would be appropriate for Good Friday.

Johann Kuhnau's extant vocal works will be fully complete in the Breitkopf & Hartel catalogue in coming years. These are cantatas as a rule, but at least works with instrumental accompaniment. The Three Motets in this volume are therefore unique, including in addition to the well known Tristis est anima mea, also the two other extant Kuhnau motets Ach Gott, wie lasst du mich verstarren, as well as Gott hat uns nicht gesetzt zum Zorn. Each one, of five parts (with the tenor or canto part doubled), these masterpieces round out the picture of Johann Kuhnau, Johann Sebastian Bach's predecessor as St. Thomas cantor. Really interesting. Kuhnau shows a real feeling for the texts he is setting, with effective chromaticism in the doleful 'Tristis est anima mea'.(Jeremy Jackman, Choir & Organ).

This is the final motet in a set of three intended for various seasons. It opens with the sopranos alone presenting a soaring musical theme that is developed throughout the piece. The alto divides and needs a rich contralto tone to make its proper affect. The phrases rise and fall in the middle voice, giving the words a lovely setting for expression.

Influenced by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, the Irish composer Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) developed an English Romantic musical language of his own. This is noticeable especially in his three Latin motets in which a typically 'English' tone prevails, characterized by extremely flowing melodies, smooth harmonies and great singability. These three compositions are perfect for church services and concerts. Contents: Iustorum animae • Coelos ascendit hodie • Beati quorum via.

The arrangements in this collection represent 80 percent of Duruflé's entire a cappella oeuvre, with three from the four Quatre Motets sur des thèmes grégoriens Op. 10 (1960) alongside Notre Père Op. 14 (1977/1978). The name SAM-Klang takes the three voice parts from the arrangements -- Soprano, Alto and Men -- and combines it with the Scandinavian and German words for “sound†to create the portmanteau word “sound together†or “harmony.†The series offers basic and advanced choral repertoire. In addition to new repertoire and new arrangements, you will also find essential parts of the classical German, Scandinavian, French and English SATB repertoire, carefully and considerately reworked for SAM. The arrangements retain the characteristic features of the original movements and have almost the same richness of timbre, resulting in works which sound nearly unchanged to an audience. Piano reductions of all choral movements facilitate rehearsal preparation. The arrangements offer development opportunities for all voice sections, bringing new life and new quality to SAM choir work. SAM-Klang enables youth choirs to gain access to classical choral literature and ensures that mixed choirs who face challenges in finding singers for all male voice parts continue to have access to well-loved repertoire.

Joh ann Hermann Schein's Israelsbrunnlein, published in Leipzig in 1623, is a supreme achievement not only among the works of this composer, who had been Thomaskantor in Leipzig since 1616, but also for the entire body of German music written during the first half of the 17th century. Among the 26 motets written in the Italian madrigal manner 23 are settings of Old Testament texts, a fact to which the collection owes its title. The source for the text of this collection is the inexhaustible fountain of the Psalms, the books of Moses, the Prophets, the Songs of Solomon, and other books of the Old Testament.

In addition to three Motets for Soli, Choir and Orchestra only the Motet Laboravi has survived from the sacred music of Rameau. Laboravi was published in Rameaus Traite de l'harmonie reduite a ses principes naturels in the chapter about the fugue as an exampel. But she was probably composed around 1700. Transposed version (whole tone higher): Carus 3.352/40.

Insp iration for the Three Motets op. 39 was a visit to the romanesque church of Trinita dei Monti. On 20 Dec 1830 Mendelssohn wrote to his parents: The French nuns sing there, and it is wonderfully lovely. ... Now, one should know one more thing: that one is not allowed to see the singers. Therefore I have come to an unusual decision: I will compose something for their voices, which I rememer exactly.... Score available separately - see item CA.4070300.

In his six-volume collection Motetten und Chorarien (1779) Johann Adam Hiller compiled the works of his fellow composers in six volumes and published them himself. The third volume of this collection contains compositions of the master motet composers, Homilius and Rolle, as well as works by Graun, Caldara, Fehre, Tag and Hiller. The motet by Caldara, a Latin composition for three lower voices and basso continuo, is in many respects out of place.

Lavi shly produced, the 1575 Cantiones, quae ab argumento sacrae vocantur by Byrd and Tallis celebrated not only the composers' acquisition of the royal patent for the printing and marketing of part-music and lined music paper, but also their mastery of the continental polyphonic style. Though the edition was only moderately successful, a number of Byrd's 17 motets in 5 and 6 parts survived in manuscript sources until the Commonwealth period. Three motets were also adapted to English words.

This text of comfort and hope is by Jeannette Lindholm. Mr. Stearns has provided a homophonic setting that is not only gracious to the ear but provides a serene foundation for the text. This short motet is appropriate as an introit during a penitential season as well as a general anthem.
