For three-part upper-voice choir. This is a witty and ingenious work, scored for three-part upper voices (either unaccompanied or with instruments doubling the voices). The three riddles each explore ideas of balance and symmetry, whether through the use of canon, inversion, or palindrome, and the result is an intriguing and unusual concert piece.

Among the most intriguing of this pioneering American composer’s works, Three Songs on poems of Carl Sandburg is scored for Contralto with Oboe, Percussion, and Piano, plus an optional orchestra. The study score includes an essay introducing Crawford’s unique work in historical contexts as she sought a new musical language accessible to the many, while remaining uncompromisingly avant-garde.

The Exeter Book is a collection of many different writings and is generally acknowledged to be one of the great works of the English Benedictine revival of the tenth century. Among the other texts in the Exeter Book, there are over ninety riddles or kennings. The difference between a riddle and a kenning, is that the answer to a riddle is in itself meaningless - a means to an end, a guessing game. The Kennings of the Exeter Book, on the other hand, are part of an ancient tradition of learning through memorable metaphor, much valued in the Anglo-Saxon world.
