The composer writes, 'Quite some time ago I heard - through a conversation in a mobile phone - a wonderful concert of ringing church bells from an European capital. I found it very hard to concentrate about the conversation, because I was so engrossed by the chaotic world of bell sound. The night after, I dreamt that the sound of those low singing bells was rising up from a piano in a huge empty concert hall. That experience became the starting point for my piano piece, 'The Shadows of Silence'. But before the piece gets to the ringing bells it moves through a landscape of shadows - Shadows of the silence before the bells - Silence before the storm - Shadows of melodies which all the time leaves traces even in the short passages of storm. After the passage with the low ringing bells the shadows of silence returns melted in to a lament, which are sending two regards. One to two small beautiful - not very well known - bars by Mozart, and one to the sextet in my own opera, 'Under the Sky'.

These jazz arrangements of well-known hymns were written for Andrew Earis and choirs of St Martin-in-the-Fields, London for various services and BBC broadcasts from that church. The setting of “Come down, O Love divine†supplies some new harmonic moves to Vaughan Williams' lovely tune “Down Ampneyâ€, gradually adding vocal harmony through the verses, with a short descant section in the final verse. The compound-time arrangement of “God Is Love,†which can also be sung to the supplied words of Charles Wesley's hymn “Love Divine,†again adds more of Todd's iconic jazz harmonies and textures in the vocal parts with each successive verse. The setting of “Let all mortal flesh keep silence†is structured to gradually build layers over the moody piano chords and the pedal harmony. At the end the music builds to a large climax for the text “Lord most highâ€. The hymns can be performed using the supplied piano part or using the chord symbols above. Double bass may also be used in addition to piano, again following the supplied chord symbols, and parts for optional jazz ensemble are available. Performers of these hymns should feel free to include the congregation or audience in imaginative ways.

Mother Teresa liked to surprise people she met by giving them a small card printed with five concise sentences instead of a calling card. The brief text on the card beginning with the line “The fruit of silence is prayer†was a summary of her vision of devout, peace-promoting philanthropy in poetical form. In 2013, I created a musical setting of Mother Teresa's “Prayer of Peace†which was commissioned by the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival for mixed choir a cappella (C 55851) in the form of a densely woven elegiac sound stream. Slightly later, I extended the work to produce a version with piano (C 56345) which in turn became the basis for a setting scored for mixed choir with string orchestra which was first performed in Riga in October 2014. In 2015, the versions for piano quintet (ED 22450) and string quartet (ED 22723) also permitted my musical setting of Mother Teresa's words to be performed without choir in two traditional genres of chamber music. The current published version for mixed choir and organ extends the work series through a further conventional scoring.

This much loved text, set to the tune PICARDY, is skillfully arranged for voices, organ, and handbells by Oklahoma composer LIsa Stafford. The stark organ texture in the opening verse sets the plaintive mood and provides a foundation for the melody line as the handbells ring softly above. Verses 2 and 3 emphasize a four-part choral structure, the latter stanza written for voices alone and employing a cunning use of contrary motion between SA and TB. An organ interlude initiates a running eighth-note figure that segues into and continues through the final verse as all forces unite.

The Universe works in strange ways. Recorded almost three years ago, none of us could have known that when this recording was released the world would have lived through a life-altering pandemic or a tumultuous upheaval in the cultural awareness that now surrounds us. The work that opens this recording—with the words of Quaker George Fox that end with, “So be faithful, and live in that which doth not think the time longâ€â€”provid es a haunting premonition regarding the time in which we live, Quaker George Fox is strangely prophetic about these days and perhaps provides a future caution for us all. The music chosen for this recording is strangely and poignantly relevant, I believe, for each of us. “The Fruit of Silence†by PÄ“teris Vasks reminds us to visit those beliefs that are most sacred in the work by Cortlandt Matthews. A deeply personal Requiem by Peter Relph, in reflection, remembers the hundreds of thousands of lives lost in the pandemic. And then there is Thomas LaVoy’s “O Great Beyond.†All great texts are timeless and speak to the universality of the human condition. Particularly, the George Fox text set by Jackson Hill and the Tagore text set by LaVoy give us messages to reinforce the humanness of each of us for hope. Two other works on this recording poignantly remind us of the passing of life, with the Relph Requiem and especially the final movement of “O Great Beyond.†May these words give comfort to all those who endured the deepest of Life’s losses during our shared pandemic journey. For so many loved ones, goodbyes were said in silence, and alone. It is our hope that all the music on this CD will show us a way for living as we move forward and also give loving comfort to those who have lost loved ones. Peace, my heart, let the time for the parting be sweet. Let it not be a death but completeness. Let love melt into memory and pain into songs. Let the flight through the sky end in the folding of the wings over the nest. Let the last touch of your hands be gentle like the flower of the night. Stand still, O Beautiful End, for a moment, and say your last words in silence. I bow to you and hold up my lamp to light you on your way. —Rabindranath Tagore in The Gardener (1913).

God created the world by speaking into the silence of chaos. Ever creative, he offers salvation to us, breaking the silence surrounding our lives by speaking through his son, Jesus the Christ. This unique Christmas work examines the ways in which God has spoken to us from creation to the birth of Christ Child. God's creative word comes to us through the angels, the shepherds, the Wise Men and through the Babe of Bethlehem himself. The orchestrations are distinctive, and the choral parts are moderately easy, yet full-sounding.

Having been interested in Mahayana Buddhism for a number of years, I went to a Buddhist monastery in upstate New York to study meditation in 1999. One evening, while walking alone by the side of the lake, I caught the sight of a 'V'shape floating and extending on the surface of the water. It was a beaver taking a swim under the moon. This image gave me insight into my relationship with silence: underneath the music is a profoundly deep silence upon which I seekto inscribe my signature through sound. It serves as a point of departure that led to a series of works. In Lakescape V, the tranquility in the original 'lake' series is disturbed by showers of 'phonetic particles' taken from Wai-lim Yip's poetry (in both English and Chinese) as the piece traverses through different states of mind.Lakescape V was written for and dedicated to loadbang who gave its world premiere at the Miller Theatre's Composer Portrait on November 17th, 2016.- Lei Liang.

The idea of Song in Winter came from the imagination of the pine and the bamboo. They are so persistent and dauntless. Standing in the frigid winter, they are evergreens. In Chinese paintings, they are featured characters; in Chinese literature, they are praised as symbols against evil influences and unhealty trends. Chen Yi admires their beautiful appearances and their strong spirit and expresses their feelings through their music, which combines Chinese and Western musical materials and medium. The silence between the gestures is like the space in brush painting and calligraphy.Song in Winter is a trio written for harpsichord, dizi (bamboo flute) and zheng (Chinese zither). My idea for this piece came from the pine and the bamboo. Such persistent and dauntless trees! Standing in the frigid winter, they are evergreens. In Chinese paintings, they are the featured characters, while in Chinese literature, they are praised as symbols against evil influences and unhealthy trends. I admire their beautiful appearances and their strong spirit. I express my feelings through my music, which combines Chinese and Western musical materials and media. Using the harpsichord, an old Western instrument, and the zheng and dizi, two old Chinese instruments, I mix keyboard, plucking and blowing instruments into a whole. The silence between the gestures is like the space in Chinese brush painting and calligraphy. Although I have been living in a western society for seven years, I have found my thinking closely linked with Chinese arts. I merged them into my musical language in the trio. Song in Winter was commissioned and inspired by Prof. Joyce Lindorff, the winner of the Pro Musicis Foundation's international competition, for her March 23, 1994 concert at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, sponsored by the Foundation. It is dedicated to Ms. Lindorff and Ms. Susan Cheng, the founder and executive director of Music From China, who has been enthusiastically supporting Chinese new music in New York for many years. The work has been recorded on the album “Sparkle: Chamber Music of Chen Yi†on CRI, released in New York in 1999. The trio has also been adapted for quartet: flute, zheng (Chinese zither), piano and percussion, for ALEA III, for the premiere concert in Feb. 4, 1994, in Boston.—Chen Yi(born in China, 1953).

Contains Le Roi Lear: Prelude,Premiere Fanfare, and La Mort de Cordelia,Toomai des elephants, Rodrigue et Chimene: Prelude a l'acte 1p. Le Martyre de Saint Sebastien: La Passion , and No-ja-li ou Le Palais du SilenceFrom Robert Orledge's notes:My interest in the wonderful music of Claude Debussy began in the 1980s when I researched and published a book with Cambridge University Press entitled Debussy and the Theatre. During the course of my studies in Paris, I was amazed to discover that Debussy planned over 50 theatrical works but only finished two of these entirely by himself (the opera Pelleas et Melisande in 1893-1902 and the ballet Jeux for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in 1912-13). Of the rest, many were never started musically (like Siddartha and Orphee-roi with the Oriental scholar Victor Segalen, 1907); some had a few tantalising sketches (like the Edgar Allan Poe opera Le Diable dans le beffroi, 1902-03); some were half-finished (like his other Poe opera La Chute de la Maison Usher, 1908-17); while others were musically complete but had their orchestrations completed by other composers (like Khamma, by Charles Koechlin, 1912-13; or Le Martyre de Saint Sebastien and La Boite a joujoux by his 'angel of corrections' ['l'ange des Corrections'] Andre Caplet in 1911 and 1919 respectively). For it has to be admitted that what some scholars call Debussy's 'compulsive achievement' could equally well be viewed as laziness, especially as far as the minute detail required for calligraphing his orchestral scores was concerned. It was as if creating the music itself was of greater importance than controlling its final sound, even if Debussy was an imaginative orchestrator when he found the time and energy to do it. It also seems true that Debussy also preferred inventing ideas to turning them into complete pieces. However, despite the lack of detail in many of his sketches (missing clefs, key signatures, dynamics, phrasing, etc.) the notes themselves are surprisingly accurate, whether or not they can be compared with a later draft. Thus, a large number of sketches exist for his Chinese ballet No-ja-li ou Le Palais du Silence and it is not too difficult to see which parts of Georges de Feure's 1913 scenario (see below) inspired which ideas. But Debussy hardly made any attempt to join them together after the first few bars.It was usually up to his publisher, Jacques Durand, to find solutions when Debussy risked a breach of contract. Debussy was supposed to supervise the orchestrations completed by others, but this supervision was usually very light and restricted to quiet, sensitive moments in which problems were easier to spot. Far from jealously guarding every one of his created notes, as Ravel did, Debussy once even went as far as to ask Koechlin to 'write a ballet for him that he would sign' on 26 March 1914 when he was hard-pressed to fulfil his lucrative contract for No-ja-li with Andre Charlot at the Alhambra Theatre in London. In the end, Debussy (through Durand) sent Charlot the symphonic suite Printemps instead, whose orchestration had been completed by Henri Busser in the Spring of 1912.So, when I was offered early retirement as Professor of Music at Liverpool University in 2004, I seized the opportunity it would give me to spend time trying to reconstruct some of Debussy's lost potential masterpieces from his existing sketches and drafts--then orchestrating them in Debussy's style when this was appropriate. I had begun this mission in 2001 with the most promising project, the missing parts of Scene 2 of La Chute de la Maison Usher and the sheer joy it gave me at every stage persuaded me to tackle other projects, especially when Debussy experts were unable to identify exactly where I took over from Debussy (and vice versa) in Usher.
