For its farewell season after 35 years, the Nomos Quartet from Hanover created a concert series in 2019 around the works by Ludwig van Beethoven, who had set standards in the field of string quartets. For this event, the ensemble commissioned a new work from Irister Schiphorst, in which the composer at first studied Beethoven's first contribution to the genre. However, her distance from the reference piece became greater than initially planned, and the question that moved centre-stage was: 'How does Beethoven's music resonate in me at all? Is it musical gestures, themes or moods?' The tonal result of this composing self-exploration is - rich in contrast, often noise-like and pushing the dynamic range to its limits - the personal reformulation of Beethovian 'pathos formulas',i. e. signs of passionate experience embodied in the universal cultural heritage.

The opening chorus of the cantata Schauet doch und sehet (Look ye then and see now) is one of those movements by Bach which are much better known in their later guise: the first part of it became the Qui tollis of the Mass in B minor. But this movement is not the only high point of the cantata from Bach's earliest Leipzig period. Both the arias are also unusual: a bass aria depicting God's anger dramatically as a thundering storm, with strings and slide trumpet, which gives the movement a very special colour through its unexpected notes beyond the instrument's natural series, and an alto aria with two recorders, accompanied by just two oboi da caccia in unison, which take the role of the continuo as little basset instruments. Music almost not of this world! New revised edition. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3104600.

The cantata Widerstehe doch der Sunde BWV 54 is now one of Johann Sebastian Bach's most popular solo cantatas. The short text, which comprises three movements, comes from a 1711 collection of cantata texts by the Darmstadt court poet Christian Lehms, and warns in drastic terms that no sinner will inherit the kingdom of God. It is certainly no coincidence that Bach allocated this text to an alto voice, then often regarded as a symbol for the repentant sinner. The cantata comes from Bach's Weimar period and only survives in a fair copy of the score by Johann Gottfried Walther (music text ) and Johann Tobias Krebs (vocal text underlay). This didn't 't present any difficulties in preparing an edition. In Lehms' word book the cantata is allocated to Oculi Sunday (the third Sunday in Lent), but can also readily be sung on other occasions in the church year. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3105400.

The choral cantatas are Reger's most personal and most substantial contribution to one of the principal categories of Protestant church music, and they are only major works in this field by one of the foremost composers of his time. This is true despite the fact that Reger himself does not appear to have considered the cantatas to figure among his principal compositions, as he gave them no opus numbers. In contrast to the three other chorale cantatas of Reger which exist in a definitive form, there is no record of the place or date of the first performance of O wie selig, or indeed of any performance of it during the composer's lifetime.
