No less than 37 years, more than half of Wagner's life, passed from the first idea of the opera 'Parsifal' to its world premiere in Bayreuth in 1882, it being Wagner's last stage work before his death on 13 February 1883. The music publisher Schott from Mainz paid 100,000 marks to acquire 'Parsifal', and the fact that 'Parsifal' has become part of the repertoire of all major music theatres of the world proved the publisher right. This opera is performed every year, especially on Good Friday, always with the same great success with the audience. Every music lover witnesses the grandeur of this highly significant work.Apart from the libretto, this edition contains introductory commentaries of Kurt Pahlen who also adds information on the compositional structure and context to the musical as well as external and internal dramatic action of the opera. A short synopsis and a brief outline of the genesis bring the work into relation with the composer's entire oeuvre and life, thus offering a comprehensive, richly illustrated introduction.

Volume 12 in the series contains works by great composers adapted for four cellos. They all share a festive mood. Beethoven's variations on the theme of the British nation anthem 'God Save the King' are followed by 'The Shepherds' Farewell' from Berlioz' oratorio The Childhood of Christ, and three Christmas pieces by Mendelssohn. The excerpt from Wagner's Parsifal - excellently transcribed by Hermann Jacobowsky at the end of the 19th century - is associated with Good Friday, but because of its sacred character its mood blends with that of the preceding pieces.Inhoud:1. Sommai re:1. The music of Richard Wagner can be daunting to beginning pianists, but this collection offers an accessible approach to the famous nineteenth-century composer's works. The arrangements focus on Wagner's melodies and style, presenting manageable excerpts from the more abstract works in simplified keys and with suggested fingerings. More than 30 pieces consist chiefly of selections from Wagner's operas. Highlights include the thrilling Ride of the Valkyries from Die Valküre, the second of the four Ring Cycle operas. Other pieces from the epic musical series include Siegfried the Hero from Siegfried and Song of the Rhine Daughters from Götterdämmerung. The collection also features pieces from Parsifal,Tannhäuser, The Flying Dutchman,Rienzi, Lohengrin, and Tristan und Isolde, as well as other works. Each selection features a brief Introduction that provides historical context and, in some cases, suggestions for performance.

Wagn er began writing the opera Parsifal in 1857 but didn't complete it until 1882. It's first performance was given at Bayreuth just 4 months before his death. It is loosely based on a 13th-century epic poem of King Arthur and his quest for the Holy Grail. The Vorspiel or Prelude contains all the main themes from the opera and has a religious or mystical feeling to it. Randy Malmstrom has done a beautiful job with his 7-minute arrangement of the work for advanced performers. This arrangement is condensed based on the original. The instrumentation is for: 4 Trumpets in B-flat, 4 Horns in F, 4 Trombones, Euphonium (bass clef), Tuba and Timpani.
