A Bandsman’s Overture was commissioned by British Bandsman magazine to celebrate its 125th anniversary in 2012. It was premiered by Black Dyke Band conducted by Dr Nicholas Childs at a special anniversary concert held in Symphony Hall Birmingham on July 1st.British Bandsman was for a period known as British Bandsman and Contest Field following an amalgamation of two magazines. The then owner John Henry Iles celebrated this new title by commissioning Ord Hume to write the famous march BB & CF. As a salute to this heritage A Bandsman’s Overture starts with the four notes B(b)-B(b)-C-F a motive which permeates an opening fanfare which contrasts a busy opening with a more legato central section. This gives way to a bustling Vivo based on repeated staccato notes. A change of key heralds a central cantabile melody first on euphoniums and baritone and then played by the full band which is followed by a short development section. This leads to a transformed reprise and a return of the opening fanfare decorated this time by florid muted cornets.

Complete Edition. Supplementary Volume 16 of the New Liszt Edition contains free arrangements and technical exercises. In the first section can be found early versions of three arrangements. The first consists of the first and intermediary versions of a transcription of Die Rose, a song Schubert composed to a poem by Schlegel. The arrangement of the second movement of Berlioz's Harold Symphony also draws on literary inspiration: Lord Byron's (1788-1824) narrative poem Childe Harold's Pilgrimage (1812-18) was a literary experience Liszt shared with Berlioz. The fantasy on themes from Bellini's opera La sonnambula [The Sleepwalker] (here the first version of 1842, and the second version dating from the following decade are given) is important in music history because it was while he worked on this (and other operatic fantasies) that Liszt developed a new concept of the form, which took shape in more complex and more concentrated fantasies than before. Particularly interesting material can be found in the appendix. In addition to sketches and drafts for arrangements of Spanish themes, there are three sources published here for the first time, which shed light on technical aspects of Liszt's piano teaching. These are three sets of exercises: the first written by Liszt himself for Valérie Boissier in 1832; the second a copy in an unidentified hand from the same period or slightly later; and finally the third which was noted down in 1871 by Henri Maréchal in Rome based on the composer's dictation. This latest volume of the New Liszt Edition includes a detailed preface in German, English, and Hungarian containing new research findings, together with five manuscript facsimiles and critical notes. Simultaneously with the cloth-bound Complete Edition, a practical paperback version has been published, the contents of which are identical to those of the hardcover edition, minus the inclusion of critical notes.

A young singers journey consists of six workbooks and accompanying audio CDs a booklet of sight-singing and warm-up exercises for each level and a laminated keyboard. Flash card masters designed to correlate with the material presented in eachworkbook are also available. Contact the publisher regarding further aids to the curriculum.Children learn at different rates and each child will approach these books with a different skill set. A child who completes three pages per week could complete two books per year or six books in three years. A younger child may work more slowly andan older child may be able to complete the books with little teacher-direction at a faster pace. The marking pages at the front of each book have columns for written comments and a sticker reward for each page. The column forticker rewards is meant to be used only after a page is completed including all corrections. The marking pages will reflect the childs progress and show at a glance the pages that need more work. Most pages include CD tasks that should be completedwith the pages. The CDs reinforce and further teach the concepts on the page while training the child to hear and use the written material. At the end of each track a 'secret word' is given. The child should write this wordbeside the CD track number to show that he or she has listened to it. Bullets highlight the written tasks on each page. Children are invited to check off the bullet for each task as it is completed. A certificate at the end of each book may be signedby the teacher and awarded when the child has completed the book. The warm-up exercises include syllable songs jingles and exercises using the finger staff and keyboard. Memorization and accuracy of these exercises could be tested duringpre-rehearsal activities. Par VAUGHAN WILLIAMS RALPH. for Tenor Tuba (Euphonium) and piano Vaughan Williams's Concerto for Bass Tuba and Orchestra was the first major concerto to be written for the instrument. Euphonium Concerto. The Euphonium Concerto was commissioned by the Euphonium Foundation UK and was written for, and dedicated to, David Childs. This three-movement work, lasting some 22 minutes, is a truly symphonic work in both its structure and scale. Its three movements, subtitled Dialogues, Song without Words, and A Celtic Bacchanal, explore the full range of the technical, musical, and emotional scope of the euphonium.
