Simon Holt 's the man in the wind and the west moon was composed for Solo Harp in 2013, having been commissioned by The Tanza Trust. The piece takes its title from a line in a Dylan Thomas poem named 'And death shall have no dominion'. The four sections of the work see shifting harmonies throughout, with the first section repeating but also changing ever so subtly. The unique thing about the piece is that each section is dynamically different, but is left open to interpretation by the player. The man in the wind and the west moon was first performed on the 2nd of June 2014 at Milton Court Concert Hall in London by Alex Rider. The piece lasts around 7minutes, and the bottom C and D strings should be tuned to C# and D# respectively.

Inspired by this popular composer's journey through the western hill country of England and Wales, this delightful piece borrows from folk melodies he heard on a river near the Scottish border. The three contrasting sections of the piece make it equally suitable for concert or contest use and Sheldon's artful scoring makes this one of the nicest new pieces we have heard. Splendid Music!

This piece was commissioned by Japan Ground Self Defense Force Western Army Band. In the programme note for the premiere the composer wrote: I am always impressed by the expansive earth and sparkling ocean scenery when I come to Kyushu. I have met many local people here and they are all expressive and energetic. I wrote this dramatic piece to convey to the whole of Japan the memory of my experience here, swaying in the west wind. I wrote this, hoping that the Self Defense Force will forge closer ties with the community through this piece. Composer Robert W. Smith has enjoyed his sojourns in the great state of Texas each summer since 1985. In a recent visit to the southwest with his family, he was inspired to sketch three impressions of the Lone Star State. Desert Dawn opens the work with Native-American overtones depicting the warmth of the sunrise over a beautiful southwestern vista. Anyone ever visiting San Antonio will delight in the Paseo Del Rio depicting the light and lively Riverwalk of this great city. The energetic and powerful Longhorns concludes the work with a sense of joy while celebrating this uniquely American way of life. Suitable for concert and festival performance, Southwest Summer will be a valued addition to your next program.

This fresh and exciting work explores the unique colors and characteristics of the northern plains from a musical perspective. The driving percussive rhythmic elements and regal fanfare-like themes of the introduction give way to beautiful, lyrical melodic lines, a popular characteristic of Huckeby's ultra-descriptive music. Beyond The Western Sky will make a great choice for your next concert or contest performance!

Composing this piece was an interesting process. A piece of a melody or an idea takes shape, and after writing it down, itas like planting a seed that starts to grow and develop. I got a snippet of a western idea and then thought of a monument in my hometown of Wheeling, West Virginia. The statue is called Madonna of the Trail. The history part of this piece started to take shape as I researched this statue. There are twelve of them located in twelve states where the Old Trail Road, or National Road, passes through. As the piece developed, I started to think about the travel of a pioneer woman and her family passing through various areas of our early country. The 3,000 mile coast-to-coast National road was realized in the early 1900s but was based on six trails that date back to the 1700s. After developing the introduction and theme to this concert band piece, the story began to take shape. The slower 3/4 section melody hints at Greensleeves (What Child Is This) which appropriately weaves itself into the mix. Finally heading further west into New Mexico, Arizona, and California, the melody takes on a Spanish flavor and returns to the main theme before its conclusion. Divisi parts that are optional can be utilized to add a richer sound. Feel free to experiment with octave changes in the woodwinds in the fuller sections, if students are comfortable playing up an octave. Always be aware of the musicality, blend, and especially legato playing when required.Composing this piece was an interesting process. Red River Station is a bright and upbeat work emulating the style popularized by the soundtrack of the great American west. After the Civil War, cattle drives from Texas to Kansas included a stop at Red River Station along the Chisholm Trail, just before leaving Texas. The syncopated rhythms and pentatonic melodies bring to the life the vibrant and beautiful landscape and experience of riding horseback through the southwest. The energetic and inventive orchestration and exciting nature of this work make it an excellent fit for any concert, and a great contest or festival selection.

Reflecting the energy and drive of the furious winds of November on Lake Michigan, this original work will resonate with anyone ever caught in a storm. The strong Dutch heritage of West Michigan bestows the name Meer Winden, lake winds in Dutch, and provides a story to the technical and musical elements of the piece. All sections play the melody and the driving accompaniments. Violins and violas use third position; violas and cellos use fourth position. Meer Winden, by Bob Phillips, provides ample opportunity for working on tone within the ensemble.

This three-movement work for saxophone quintet was created for premiere at the 18th World Saxophone Congress held in July 2018 in Zagreb, Croatia. The suite is adapted from Chen Yi's Woodwind Quintet No. 3 (2008), which was originally a four-movement piano duet (2007) and a symphonic wind ensemble work (2007). The authentic folk music from China West amazed and inspired Chen Yi in the creation of this work, which includes folk music elements drawn from the folk songs Du Mu and Amaliehuo of the Zang People; Ashima of the Yi People; as well as Dou Duo and the Lusheng ensemble music of the Miao People. It is scored for soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, and bass saxophones with possible multiple players for all parts. This three-movement work is adapted from my Woodwind Quintet No. 3 (2008), which was originally a four-movement piano duet (2007) and a symphonic wind ensemble work (2007), arranged here for a saxophone ensemble, for premiere at the 18th World Saxophone Congress held in July 2018 in Zagreb, Croatia.
