In 1759 Leopold Mozart compiled a notebook as a present for his daughter Maria Anna (usually called ‘Nannerl’) it was intended as a series of instructive exercises and practice pieces. The notebook though wasn't used solely by Nannerl but also by her younger brother Wolfgang and the talented boy didn't just use it for Piano practice but soon started to compose his own little pieces. Either Wolfgang himself or his father wrote them into the remaining empty pages of the notebook. This new edition contains only compositions by Leopold and Wolfgang Mozart. It is a companion volume to ‘The Young Mozart’ by H. Schüngeler which contains thefirst and easiest compositions by Wolfgang (ED 9008). The choral collection Mozart · Haydn contains sacred music of two famous pairs of composers from the Viennese classical school: father and son Leopold and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and the brothers Joseph and Johann Michael Haydn. This complete edition of the Mozart sonatas for violin and keyboard has been researched and prepared by Cliff Eisen one of the most distinguished Mozart scholars of our time. Professor Eisen recognizes that many of the apparent inconsistencies and idiosynchrasies of Mozart's notation are perfectly deliberate and that the attempts in many other editions to impose uniformity upon similar phrases or musical paragraphs can bemisguided. As he writes in the preface '...the notion that the classical style represents a model of symmetry balance and clarity is for the most part an 19th-century fiction...it has little to do with Mozart's actual practice which is basedprimarily on variety of both content and articulation.' So in this new edition alternative readings found in parallel passages are preserved rather than being sterilized by a spurious quest for conformity. Naturally all such instances are noted within the Critical Commentary. The highly individual beaming within Mozart's autographs is also respected in the new edition as this often contributes to our aural perceptions of phrase structure and accent. Professor Eisenis is conscious that there is no single 'Urtext' for this music. On the contrary he believes that 'there is compelling evidence that Mozart's later performances of his works were characterized by changes--sometimes substantial changes--in the musical text.' This Mass intended for Sundays and minor feasts was in any case written for Salzburg Cathedral in the archives of which is preserved an authentic set of parts containing markings by Mozart and his father. When the master journeyed to Paris in 1777 he took the autograph of this work along with him leaving it with the canons of Heilig Geist Kloster in Augsburg to have parts copied out.According to Abert (who wrote a classic biography of Mozart) this work is considered 'by manyto be the high point of Mozart's 'youthful Masses'' and 'as far as the motivic unity of the individual movements and the strengthening of the contrapuntal element is concerned goes far beyond everything composed hitherto'.Urtext of the New Mozart EditionFull score performance material (BA4770) and vocal score (BA4770-90) available for sale.

Serenade in Eb major K. 375-Late in the evening on his name day in 1781 Mozart was on his way to bed when he suddenly heard familiar sounds coming from outside: the six musicians who had given the première of his Serenade in E-flatMajor two weeks beforehand and whom he had described as ?poor fellows but who can blow together quite nicely? had now met in the courtyard and were serenading him with his own work. Although it was officially composedfor Therese Hickel in actual fact Mozart mainly wanted to impress Emperor Joseph II whose chief of the royal chamber music often went to Therese?s house ?That?s the reason why I also put a little effort into it?. By the time the Mozart family tree had blossomed into the twentieth century there was very little genius left in the bloodline. Unfortunately though at least one unscrupulous descendant Wolfbane Amarillo Mozart decided to capitalize on the family name by becoming a rock and roll composer. His only real talent seems to be plagarism but your students and audiences will have a ball unraveling his zany conconction.
