Mats Edén is without doubt one of Sweden?s foremost performers of folk and world music. With roots in the traditional music of Värmland he has developed into a highly respected musician. Besides Mats being an established solo spelman (fiddler) he also plays in a number of different constellations ? both permanent and temporary. In combination with life as a musician Mats is also active as a composer and teacher.
Mats was born in 1957 in Södertälje and grew up in Värmland in a musical family.
His interest in folk music came from his stepfather Sven Edén, who was known as an excellent fiddler and who passed on his love for
this music to Mats. From the mid 1960s Mats learnt to play
the violin with Sigvard Stenberg at the Karlstad Communal Music School. Stenberg had previously studied for Yuri Yankelevich in Moscow before he began teaching in Karlstad.
As a touring musician Mats has travelled widely
and has had the opportunity to play with all sorts of musicians ? experiences that have led Mats to reflect about himself as a musician, and in turnhave stimulated him to continually develop.
For several years now Mats has lived in Skåne, just outside Lund, and this is also where he works when not on tour.
