Transposed from D to C major.
For easier reading the note values were doubled.
First performance on christmas 1818 by the poet (first
part (tenor) and guitar) and the composer (second part,
baritone) as a duet in D major with guitar
accompaniment. River flooding had possibly damaged the
church organ. Later on the melody was variously
misattributed to Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven.

Hirten erst kundgemacht
Durch der Engel Halleluja,
Tönt es laut von fern und nah:
Christ, der Retter ist da! (2)
Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht
Lieb' aus deinem göttlichen Mund,
Da uns schlägt die rettende Stund'.
Christ, in deiner Geburt! (2)

All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant, so tender and mild,

Glories stream from heaven afar;
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ the Savior is born! (2)
