Giuseppe Neroni (1784 – 1858) was a member of an
Italian noble family. He served as a politician, but at
the same time as amateur playing clarinet and basset
horn. For a limited period he was member of the
orchestra of the „Teatro di Ascoli Piceno“. Several
composers devoted to him concerts for basset horn and
orchestra.
His own composition “Sonata a tutta Orchestra / per
Corno Bassetto / Violino Primo / principale” is
preserved in the ‘Biblioteca di archeologia e storia

preserved in the ‘Biblioteca di archeologia e storia
dell’arte’ in Rome (sig. Mss. Vess. 545). The wind
instruments (2 clarinets, 2 horns, bassoon) play only
in the tutti parts and mainly have the function of
boosting the sound. Therefore it is possible to play
the sonata without much loss of substance with basset
horn and string quartet. For this purpose we have
prepared a separate viola part.
