According to Bartók the melody came from the Mezőszabad (Voiniceni) village that was part of Mezőcsávás (Ceuașu de Câmpie) commune which was located in the Maros-Torda administrative county within Transylvania, and he first heard it when two gypsy violinists were playing it.
