Rousing arrangement of Dwelling in Beulah Land.

Perfect for prelude, offertory, or other special service music

Note: The original version contained arpeggios influenced by Chopin's Ocean Etude, Op. 25, No. 12. These were easily the hardest part of the piece and might have discouraged someone who could otherwise handle it from playing it. I've taken them out in the slightly easier version, so give that a try if the other proves too hard!

Rock of Ages and Nine Other Favorite Hymns from Northgate Baptist Church (Norman, Oklahoma)

Every church has its favorite hymns, and Northgate Baptist Church in Norman, Oklahoma, is no exception. Our hymnal—Soul-Stirring Songs & Hymns—has 503 entries, yet there are certain ones we sing more often than others. Some were well-known to me when I came to Oklahoma in 2014—others were unfamiliar to me, but a few weeks at Northgate ensured that they would be very familiar.
Obviously, the most important person in determining which hymns will be the favorites is the person who picks the hymns, and that would be our songleader, Brother Lanzo. His favorite hymn is “Sweet Hour of Prayer”—often the second of the two hymns we sing during the service. “Come Thou Fount” is also one of his favorites—he commonly sings that as a special. I’d never heard “No, Not One!” or “Joy Unspeakable,” before I came to Northgate, but he often picks those as well.
Other people have contributed to the favorites list, though. Dr. Eichmann, an elderly gentleman who passed away my second year at Northgate, used to sing specials all the time—and his favorite song to sing was “Ship, Ahoy!” Pastor Ullery likes that song too—he’ll sing the chorus when he’s checking to see if his microphone’s working.
Now, to say that the church only has ten favorites would be a gross mischaracterization. Indeed—and yours is probably the same way—there are at least twenty, possibly thirty, frequently performed hymns that could have made it into this collection. Brother Keith used to sing “To God Be the Glory” all the time, Brother Lanzo picks “He Lives” very often, and Mrs. Ullery often ends the service with “Wherever He Leads, I’ll Go,” for the invitation. Those very easily could have made the cut, and I have arranged or will arrange them, but in the interest of keeping the collection to ten, I had to hand-select a few. All of these are some of our favorites at Northgate—and soon, I hope, they’ll be among yours too—if they’re not already. Enjoy!
(Note: At Calvary and Ship Ahoy! are part of this collection-they are listed under At Calvary! and Nine Other Great Hymns of the Faith by Daniel B. Towner)
(Note: Sweet Hour of Prayer is listed under The Solid Rock and Nine Other Hymns by William B. Bradbury)
