The text is by the English poet, Joseph Addison (1672-1719), and was originally titled, Hymn. The father of English hymnody, Issac Watts, thought highly of Addison, calling him the most authentic judge of fine thought and language that our age has produced. This Addison hymn first appeared in print in the August 23, 1712, issue of The Spectator, at the end of an article by Addison entitled, An Essay on the Proper Means of Strengthening and Confirming Faith in the Mind of Man. It is based on Psalm 19, vs. 1–6. My setting of Addison’s words is full of dialogue throughout between the divided choirs. A relatively short middle section at the words, What though in solemn silence all, briefly stills the vibrant pace. However, the rhythmic energy soon returns, propelling the anthem toward its climax at the hymn’s final line, The Hand that made us is divine.SATB Double Chorus, a cappella Duration: 3' Text: Joseph Addison Composed: 2009 Published by: Subito Music Corporation Minimum order quantity: 8 copies. Joseph Addison is not particularly well known; he was English, a classical scholar, essayist, poet and politician, but one of his hymns was used by Benjamin Britten. in his setting of a Thomas Tallis canon. The hymn is singularly beautiful and being a composer always inspired by extramusical stimuli such as poems, nature, paintings, I was immediately convinced when I carne across the Addison hymn, that here was exactly what I wanted to use as my major source of inspiration for this piece, commissioned by and written for The Berlin Philharmonic. I don't refer to the hymn in its entirety, but have chosen the following 3 excerpts, all acting as mottos for the first three sections of the piece, thus turning the piece into a straightforward tonepoem in the classical.

The Gravity of Kindness is Howard Goodallâ??s stunning setting of Naomi Shihab Nyeâ??s poem Kindness, for SATB and piano with optional soprano solo. It was composed for the highly regarded Addison Singers, in memory of their long-standing member Cathy Bereznicki. Kindness is framed by two lullabies: the Mexican Arrorró mi niño and the well-known Coventry Carol, underpinned by the universal themes of unconditional love and the hope that kindness brings. The contemporary, reflective and uplifting style of the music makes this a versatile work: whilst ideal for Christmas concerts, it is equally suitable for performance at any time of the year.

La Libertà is the most original, and among the most attractive, of Maurice Greene’s secular vocal compositions on Italian texts. Strong circumstantial evidence indicates that he wrote it as a composition for the celebrated operatic singer Faustina Bordoni to sing as a grateful farewell to her English patrons and admirers just before her final departure from London in the summer of 1728. The song commemorates not only Faustina but also her constant companion and reputed lover, the violinist Mauro d’Alay, who is likely to have been the original player of the obbligato violin part with which the vocal part interweaves. Greene took the text from an Italian translation of A Letter from Italy, a famous poem by Joseph Addison extolling liberty, which was at the time seen as a distinguishing characteristic of England.

Inspired by the poet, Joseph Addison, who's words tell us that the Three grand essentials to happiness in this life are something to do, something to love, and something to hope for, the latter oft times being the most difficult to bring to fruition. Establishing four-bar phrasing and developing sensitivity to balance, this work makes an excellent introduction to ballad-style playing for developing bands. (2:45).

When you are a prodigy, you should study with the best. For Lukas Foss (born Lukas Fuchs), this meant studying orchestration with Felix Wolfes, composition with Noel Gallon, and even flute with Louis Moyse. In 1937, his family moved to the United States, the family name became Foss, and young Lukas would attend the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he would meet fellow classmate Leonard Bernstein. This led to a lifelong friendship of mutual admiration-Bernstein would conduct the world premiere of Time Cycle, and Foss would conduct the premiere of Symphonic Dances from West Side Story. Time Cycle would garner the New York Music Critics Circle Award for 1961 and be hailed as a true masterpiece of American music. Sony Classical has included the premiere recording by Leonard Bernstein and the Columbia Symphony Orchestra with soloist Adele Addison in their remastered series Bernstein Century.
