The third Little Organ Book establishes thematic accents (Praise and Thanks - Trust and Prayer). We called upon the leading names of contemporary organ music such as Jurg Baur, Karl Holler, Jean Langlais, Hermann Schroeder and Wolfgang Stockmeier to arrange a selection of well-known hymns from the Catholic and Evangelical hymn books. As in the two volumes (Passion - Easter - Pentecost and Advent - Christmas) the Little Marienstatt Organ Book offers a Chorale prelude as well as a polyphonic organ setting of the respective church hymn, which are almost all firnt publications.Choral preludes and organ settings by various authors.

Carl Smith's experience as a musicologist and performer specializing in early keyboard literature combines with inspiration from Italy's art and culture to form a collection of short organ pieces that are suitable for small and large organs. Two works are based on hymns from the Advent and Christmas seasons (Conditor alme siderum and Silent Night). The others are original pieces of varied character suitable as service voluntaries or recital selections.

Lynn Arthur Koch has chosen a mix of both familiar and lesser-known Advent and Christmas hymns for the settings in this book. Several tunes are folk melodies drawn from the famous Oxford Book of Carols. With a duration of two minutes or less per piece, they can be seamlessly combined into suites, providing an ideal solution for occasions when longer preludes are needed.

The organists Helmut Brand, Ingo Bredenbach and Martin Hagner play on the organ of the Evangelische Stadtkirche Tutttlingen 67 of their own new chorale arrangements of well-known hymns from the Evangelische Gesangbuch (German Protestant Hymnbook). Carus has published these settings in a new edition. This volume presents a loose succession of the most important hymns contained in the Gesangbuch. Some of them allude to musical eras of the past, some refer tongue in cheek, in a more or less hidden manner, to famous compositions. Score available separately - see item CA.1811500.

The Freiburger Orgelbuch 2 is mainly aimed at semi-professional organists who are looking for challenging pieces with a clear liturgical use. All liturgical situations are provided for: ceremonial processions, music for the offertory and communion, meditative organ music, and pieces based on chorales for the major festivals of the church year. Besides a wide range of German and Austrian organ music, there is additional variety with selected works by French, English, Spanish, Italian, and American composers. The arrangement of the contents by country reflects the international scope of the book. There are short commentaries on the pieces, providing information on each composer and questions of registration. The selection offers a broad stylistic variety, ranging from toccatas to Romantic character pieces and Vesper voluntaries. The easy-to-medium level of difficulty will be particularly welcomed by semi-professional organists. But more experienced players will also find previously little-known treasures of the organ music repertoire in this edition. The Freiburger Orgelbuch 2 will surely become an important compendium for organ teaching because of its broad contents. Selected works can be heard on a CD in top-quality recordings on newly-built and historic instruments in the Archdiocese of Freiburg in the Lake Constance region (Constance, Hilzingen), and the area around Karlsruhe.

Bach was not able to use the Weimar Advent cantata Argre dich, o Seele, nicht BWV 186a in Leipzig, as there was no performance of church music there between the 1st Sunday of Advent and Christmas. Bach expanded and revised the cantata during his first year in Leipzig and performed it for the first time in its new form on the 7th Sunday after Trinity 1723. Only a wordbook survives from the original Weimar form of the work. Starting from the Weimar wordbook and Bach's Leipzig score, Diethard Hellmann has created a reconstruction of Bach's sole known cantata for the 3rd Sunday of Advent. Bach's Leipzig version of the cantata is available separately (Carus 31.186/50). Score and part available separately - see item CA.3118600.
