Zoltán Kodály s unaccompanied mixed choruses first appeared in print in 1943 as a collected volume published by the association Magyar Kórus. This collection contained twenty-five works. In 1951, the volume was released again in the author s edition, being expanded with eight new compositions, but without Els áldozás (First Communion). Reprint editions of this collection had been distributed by Editio Musica Budapest until 1972, when a commemorative extended edition of the mixed choruses was issued, edited by Lajos Bárdos. Until now, reprints of this collection with forty-five compositions have been circulated. Péter Erdei carefully compared the printed edition with themanuscripts of the works preserved at the Kodály Archives. As a result of his work, in 2011 we emended a number of misprints, including those that had been inherited since the earliest print. Seventy-five years after the first release, the time has come for Kodály s collected choral works for mixed voices to appear in a completely new, expanded edition. Our collection contains six compositions that were not included in earlier editions: Jövel, Szentlélek eristen (Come, Holy Spirit), Miatyánk (The Lord s Prayer), Miserere, Salló Pista, Semmit ne bánkódjál (Do Not Grieve), ejesztend t köszönt (A Christmas Carol). In addition, two versions - both equally authentic - are published of the work known under the title of Naphimnusz (Canticle of the Sun), due to earlier editions the new release comes with lyrics in Hebrew and English (Adoration), as well as Dénes Szed s Hungarian translation (Napének [Hymn of the Sun]). This is the most complete and most authentic edition of Kodály s mixed choruses to date it is printed in a slightly larger format than previous editions, and it contains new easily-legible music scores and an informative epilogue.

This cheerful set of Eucharistic Acclamations, based on the Christmas melody Resonet in laudibus, was written for assembly, SATB, and organ with optional brass quartet. It is clear that Matthew Koraus knows what works for an assembly. The Holy, Holy and the Amen involve the congregation in a call-and-response fashion, which, combined with the use of a familiar melody, makes it very easy for them to participate. Each of the three memorial acclamations are included, as are two versions of the Amen, one simple and one more involved. For Christmas through the Baptism of the Lord; also appropriate for Advent in a pared down presentation.

O Come, O Come Emmanuel is a hymn for Advent and Christmas whose words and music developed separately over time. The Latin text was first documented in 1710 and the tune's origins date back to the 15th century. In the 18th century, John Mason Neal discovered the hymn and translated the text into English. The melody was first linked with the hymn in 1851, when Thomas Helmore paired it with Neale's translation of the text. This original version of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel was included in Hymns Ancient and Modern in 1861, which was the official hymnal of the Church of England. The song's influence spread over time and it remains one of the most popular and enduring Christmas hymns. In this arrangement of O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, the piano accompaniment is written in 12/8 meter. The vocal lines, however, can be easily taught in 4/4 time. This will allow developing students to experience the feeling of a new meter while being able to apply skills they already know.  .O Come, O Come Emmanuel is a hymn for Advent and Christmas whose words and music developed separately over time. The cantata Argre dich, o Seele, nicht BWV 186 is in a sense the companion work to the much better-known cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben BWV 147. Both were composed in Advent 1716 as Bach's last two cantatas for the Weimar court, and both were arranged for another Sunday in Bach's first Leipzig cantata cycle by the addition of recitatives and a large-scale chorale movement, heard at the end of both parts. The sound of the Cantata BWV 186 is characterized by the four-part woodwind ensemble writing. The final chorale, heard twice, anticipates the opening choruses of the chorale cantatas from Bach's second cycle. Cantata BWV 186 for the 7th Sunday after Trinity is a considerably expanded reworking of a Weimar Advent cantata of 1716. Only the text survives of the Advent cantata, but Diethard Hellmann has been able to reconstruct the work from the later version (Carus 31.186). Score and part available separately - see item CA.3118600.

Bach's well-known church cantata Schwingt freudig euch empor BWV 36 (Up joyous raise your song), first heard in its final version on First Advent Sunday in 1731 at the Leipzig Nikolaikirche, can be traced back to a secular birthday cantata from 1725. The text is now revised to render the events of Advent - the rejoicing of the opening chorus, the loving veneration and the warm-hearted welcome of the three solo arias retained from the original cantata now all apply to the Messiah, who, as once in Jerusalem, should find a place in the hearts of the faithful. However, their unmistakeable Advent character derives from the fact that Bach contrasts the four festive settings from the secular cantata with three strophes from Luther's Advent chorale, Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, thus at the same time giving a voice to the Mystery of God made man. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3103600.
