The Gospel Mass—a mass for mixed choir, combo and concert band—is based on the gospel music that has spread throughout the world since its creation in America. After Missa Brevis and Missa Katharina this is the third mass fromthe pen of Jacob de Haan. The movements of the mass ordinary as we know it have now been composed in various pop styles that have their origin in the gospel music. We hear, then, not only the classic American gospel style (including thecharacteristic clapping and swing rhythms), but also freer gospel styles that have developed over the course of time. The Credo, for example, is a ballad with rock and funk influences. The Agnus Dei is heard as a slow blues—a genreclosely linked to gospel music. The unique feature of this work, of course, is in the combination of all these pop and gospel elements with the Latin liturgy of the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei, which results in abeautiful, cohesive whole. As far as we know, The Gospel Mass is the only true gospel mass. This mass setting was commissioned by the Friends of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford and first performed on Ascension Sunday, 1994. Suitable for both church and concert use, the music is both lyrical and dramatic. The ââ¬ÅBenedictusââ¬Â is for SATB divisi and begins with a short 6/8 declamation, then moves into a section where the rhythmic idea is set in a sort of off-the-beat fashion, with all parts divisi playing against each other. A unison section with the off-the-beat motif follows. A majestic ââ¬ÅHosannaââ¬Â follows. The ââ¬ÅAgnus Deiââ¬Â is set in a rubato triple meter in a homophonic style with close chords (also divisi.) At the ââ¬Åmiserere,ââ¬Â the choir 1/choir 2 call and response motif from the ââ¬ÅGloriaââ¬Â returns. That same motif continues into the ââ¬Ådona nobis pacem,ââ¬Â as the movement (and the entire Mass) ends with a long decrescendo into a quiet call, ââ¬ÅPacem.ââ¬Â Duration 7:33.

Missa Brevis, written for choir and wind band, was commissioned by the Conseil Départemental pour la Musique et la Culture de Haute-Alsace (Dir.: Philippe Pfisterer) in Guebwiller (France), in celebration of the millennium of Pope Leon IX’sbirth in Éguisheim (France). The composer conducted the first performance on June 23, 2002. It was performed live for the French television channel France 2. The mass movements Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Deiare very suitable for the Catholic as well as the Protestant liturgy. For this mass, various ways for performing in diverse variable strengths are possible. An instrumental performance is possible if the brass represents the choir parts. In thisoption, it is desirable for the brass to be positioned separately from the rest of the band (on a gallery, for example), so that the idea of two choirs is approached. In a performance with a large choir, the brass can work very well as a support. Inthat case, the dynamics of the brass should be adapted somewhat, since these are actually intended for an instrumental performance. You can also leave out the brass entirely for the benefit of the choir. For the accompaniment of smaller choirs, youcan opt for a small ensemble from the band. This can also be a quartet, put together as desired. For the performance of this mass, the obvious choice is one of the above options. However, as an alternative, a performance with a combination of theseoptions (vocally/instrumentally) is also possible not just from an artistic point of view (variation), but also from a practical starting point for example in the case that the choir has rehearsed only two movements. With a full strength, theconductor can vary the instrumentation to his or her liking. Then the brass can also play a role in the accompaniment (instead of supporting the choir). The following combinations are possible:1. clarinet choir (from Eb Clarinet to BassClarinet)2. clarinet choir + saxophones3. brass (flugelhorns, horns, euphoniums, bass section)4. brass (2 trumpets / 2 trombones)5. double reeds (optional + flute, optional + string bass)6. tutti7. all winds8. allbrassIn a performance by brass band and choir, it is usually advisable to leave out option 1 (choir + brass + band). The choir sings self-reliantly, accompanied by a full brass band. In an instrumental performance, you can consider a combinedquartet (two cornets and two trombones) + brass band.Choral parts available separately.
2. clarinet choir + saxofoons
3. zacht koper (bugels, hoorns, euphoniums, bassen)
4. scherp koper (2 trompetten / 2 trombones)
5. dubbelrieten (eventueel + fluit, eventueel + contrabas)
6. tutti
Koorpartijen apart verkrijgbaar.Missa Brevis, geschrieben für Chor und Blasorchester entstand im Auftrag des Conseil Départemental pour la Musique et la Culture de Haute-Alsace (Dir.: Philippe Pfisterer) in Guebwiller (Frankreich), anlässlich des tausendjährigen Jubiläumsder Geburt von Papst Leo IX in Éguisheim. Der Komponist dirigierte die Uraufführung am 23. Juni 2002.
Missa Brevis is a major work for choir and brass band for performance in church or in the concert hall. For this mass, there are many performance possibilities depending on the musicians available. In addition to the standard orchestration ofchoir and band a brass quartet can also play the choral parts. For this it is desirable for the brass quartet to be positioned separately from the rest of the band (on a gallery, for example), so that the idea of two choirs is heard. It is alsopossible to perform the work with brass band and organ. A truly flexible religious masterpiece. According to the date inscribed in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's autograph score, the present mass was composed in March 1780. The instrumental setting (oboes, trumpets and timpani add color and festive splendor to the work) rightly suggests that the work was in all likelihood performed with the Church Sonata K. 336 at the Easter high mass in the Salzburg cathedral. Since Archbishop Hieronymus Count Colloredo wanted the mass text to be treated as succinctly as possible, Mozart offered him a richly orchestrated Missa solemnis in the terse form of a Missa brevis. The brilliant, festive character of the Mass K. 337 is abruptly interrupted by a powerful Benedictus in a harsh A minor, the most striking and revolutionary movement in all of Mozart's Masses, in the strictest contrapuntal style ... (Alfred Einstein). What could have inspired Mozart to such unexpected rigor? But there is another surprise yet: while the dark drama of the Holy Week seems to radiate from this Benedictus, the following Agnus Dei in the distant key of E flat major sounds, with its soprano solo and concertante oboe, bassoon and organ, like a song of thanksgiving filled with the warmth and light of Easter.Other features worth noting are the three unisons between the alto and bass heard at the Deus pater omnipotens in the Gloria (bars 22-32), the a cappella illumination of the words Jesu Christe found a little later (bar 62) and the descending chromaticism evocative of death at the Crucifixus in the Credo. (Incidentally, Mozart had initially planned a different movement for the Credo of this mass, superscribed Tempo di Chiaconna; he wrote out 136 bars but, for some unknown reason, never completed it.)While the Coronation Mass K. 317 of 1779 is one of Mozart's most well-known mass settings, its later composed frllow piece K. 337 - Mozart's last completed mass before the great C minor fragment K. 427 (417a) - has been paid less attention, even though it is an outstanding example of the Mozartian mass type and contains parallels to the Coronation Mass in its disposition and in the structure of its various movements. The score and piano reduction of this new edition were prepared on the basis of the autograph (Osterreichische Nationalbibliothek/Vienna, dass. no. Mus. Hs. 18 97512) and the Salzburg performance material (Staats- und Stadtbibliothek/Augsburg, dass. no. Hl. Kreuz 9). We wish to thank both libraries for putting the source material at our disposal.Franz Beyer, Munich, Spring 1998.

A beautiful short setting of the ordinary of the Latin mass (Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus & Benedictus, and Agnus Dei) by emerging Cornishcomposer Becky McGlade. The Kyrie finds beauty in its simplicity, which is later echoed in the Agnus Dei. The sumptuous parallel harmony and natural melodies create an atmosphere of penitent sorrow, so central to both texts. The Gloria offers something more joyous and upbeat, yet not straying from the cleverly constructed harmony and voice leading. The emotional climax comes with the Sanctus & Benedictus, which begins with the warm texture of the full choir, and through the gentle dissonances and soaring soprano line the composer conveys something of the holiness and glory of God. Ideal for choirs looking to expand their liturgical music repertoire with a manageable but impressive new mass setting. Also appropriate for concert use.

André Messager (1853-1929) was a composition and Piano pupil of Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924).
