In the course of the two centuries following the death of Henry Purcell in 1695, no British composer of any statue was apparent. Consequently, the break-through of Edward Elgar (1857-1934) as an internationally known and respected composer at the end of the last century, was of considerable importance. As a composer Elgar was largely self-taught and he looked towards the continent for his inspiration. He is without doubt on par with his contemporaries such as the somewhat younger Richard Strauss. The Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost is a genuine admirer of Elgar’s music and on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the composer’s death in 1984 he composed the “CeremonialMarchâ€. Van der Roost was inspired by the most famous and frequently played works from Elgar’s catalogue of works, the characteristic “Pomp and Circumstances†marches, and decided to add his own, sixth march to the existing collection.

In this fantasia, various movements flow from one to the next following the main theme; these movements not onlyelaborate on the theme, but also contrast with it. At times, the thematic material diverges so much, that the work acquires a character of its own; however, the composer often refers back to fragments of the theme. This work was test piece in the 4thdivision of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) in 2017.Deze compositie is gebaseerd op de mars uit Henry Purcells Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II, een werk uit het jaar 1694. In deze fantasia wordt het hoofdthema gevolgd door verschillende in elkaar overgaande delen die voortborduren op hetthema of er een contrast mee vormen. Alhoewel het thematisch materiaal soms zodanig afwijkt dat het werk een geheel eigen karakter krijgt, grijpt de componist toch steeds weer terug op flarden van het origineel. Dit werk was het verplichte werk op deNederlandse Brassband Kampioenschappen (NBK), 2017 vierde divisie.Die Komposition basiert auf dem Marsch aus Henry Purcells Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II, einem Werk, das 1694 komponiert wurde. Auf das Hauptthema der Fantasie folgen verschiedene, ineinander übergehende Sätze. In den Sätzen wirdjedoch nicht nur das Thema weiterentwickelt, sondern sie bilden zugleich einen Gegensatz zu dem Thema. Auch wenn das thematische Material manchmal so stark voneinander abweicht, dass das Werk einen ganz eigenen Charakter erhält, kehrt der Komponistimmer wieder zu Fragmenten des Themas zurück. Das Werk war 2017 Pflichtstück in der Leistungsklasse 4 bei den Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK).Cette composition se base sur la marche de la Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II (Musique pour les funérailles de la reine Mary II) d’Henry Purcell, une œuvre écrite en 1694. Dans cette fantaisie, le thème principal est suivi de plusieursmouvements enchaînés ; développé au travers de ces mouvements il est également mis en contraste. Bien que le matériau thématique dévie tellement que l’œuvre acquiert son propre caractère, le compositeur ne cesse de revenir sur des fragments du thème.Ce morceau était la pièce imposée la 4e division du Championnat National de Brass Band des Pays-Bas (NBK) en 2017.

Jeremiah Clarke (c. 1674-1707) belongs to the generation of English composers following that of Henry Purcell. Not much is known about his early life, but by 1685 he was a chorister of the Chapel Royal, a group of liturgical musicians attached to the court. He held the post of organist at Winchester College from 1692 but later returned to London as Master of the Choristers at St Paul’s Cathedral. The Prince of Denmark’s March is perhaps his best-known work and was originally written for harpsichord, although Clarke later included it in a collection of pieces for wind instruments.Jeremiah Clarke (vers 1674-1707) fait partie de la génération de compositeurs anglais succédant celle d’Henry Purcell. On sait très peu de choses sur ses débuts musicaux. En 1685, il entre en tant que choriste la chapelle royale d’Angleterre, un ensemble de musiciens liturgiques au service de la cour. partir de 1692, il est organiste Winchester College avant de retourner Londres où il est nommé chef des chœurs de la Cathédrale Saint-Paul. The Prince of Denmark’s March (“La Marche du Prince du Danemarkâ€) est sans aucun doute la plus connue des œuvres de Clarke. Composée l’origine pour clavecin, elle est incluse plus tard par Clarke dans unrecueil de pièces pour instruments vent.

I Shall Love But Thee is an occasional work in the literal sense of the word, since it was originally written on the occasion of the composer’s youngest son’s wedding. The texts, by William Shakespeare, inspired Jan Van der Roost to compose profound and appealing music, largely in the style of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and Georg Friedrich Handel (in the second part)—although no literal quotations have been used. The rather rare combination of soprano and fanfare band makes this piece a unique addition to the repertoire!I Shall Love But Thee is in de letterlijke zin van het woord een gelegenheidswerk, want het werd oorspronkelijk geschreven naar aanleiding van het huwelijk van de jongste zoon van de componist. De teksten zijn van William Shakespeare: Jan Van der Roost werd erdoor ge nspireerd tot het creëren van indringende en aansprekende muziek, die in stilistisch opzicht doet denken aan Henry Purcell (in het eerste deel) en Georg Friedrich Händel (in het tweede deel), twee componisten die op teksten van Shakespeare hebben gecomponeerd ook al zijn er geen letterlijke citaten gebruikt. De vrij zeldzame combinatie van sopraan en fanfare maakt dit werk een unieke aanwinst voor hetrepertoire! Les textes de William Shakespeare ont inspiré Jan Van der Roost écrire de la musique profonde et attrayante qui, au niveau du style, nous rappelle Henry Purcell (dans la première partie) et Georg Friedrich Haendel (dans la deuxième moitié), deux compositeurs qui ont mis en musique des textes de Shakespeare, bien qu’on n’y retrouve pas de citations littérales.
