Musicologo e musicista hanno rappresentato, in questi ultimi decenni, due entita distinte. Il musicologo e quasi sempre uno studioso di preparazione o di inclinazione piu teorica che pratica e che possiede conoscenze scientifiche e letterarie di gran lunga superiori a quelle musicali pratiche. Il musicologo e stato ed e tuttora di grande aiuto al musicista pratico nel suo rendere nota una grande mole di documenti riguardanti la prassi esecutiva delle epoche passate, in particolare del Rinascimento e del Barocco. Cio nonostante, sembra quasi che il musicologo e il musicista pratico lavorino su due piani paralleli destinati a non incontrarsi mai: da un lato la musicologia spesso dimostra di essere fine a se stessa o comunque non destinata a scopi immediatamente pratici, dall'altro il musicista e di solito abbastanza recalcitrante nell'apprendere tecniche esecutive diverse da quelle imparate in conservatorio.
Come risolvere questo problema? Qualcuno lo ha gia fatto fondendo nella stessa persona le due specialita: questo sembra difficile - e forse lo e - ma probabilmente e l'unica soluzione pos- sibile per lo sviluppo futuro della prassi esecutiva della musica antica. Qualcuno potrebbe obiettare che anche nell'antichita convivevano 'musici teorici' e 'musici pratici', ma questi ultimi era- no certamente preparati sia negli aspetti che oggi consideriamo attinenti la musicologia sia in quelli puramente pratici, cioe riguardanti la tecnica vocale e strumentale. Inoltre, gli antichi musici teorici avevano ben poco in comune con i moderni musicologi: essi appartenevano ad una speciale categoria di scienziati-filosofi, indagatori di speculazioni teoriche e matematiche nonche astrologiche e cabalistiche, tesi a investigare i segreti piu occulti in relazione con la musica.
E quindi auspicabile che il musicista moderno approfondisca la sua conoscenza della prassi esecutiva della musica antica per poterla eseguire rispettandone la vera natura. Il presente studio, gia in uso nella classe di Flauto Dolce del Conservatorio <> di Bologna, rappresenta un utile supporto per giungere a questo scopo. Il contenuto delle varie sezioni e sintetico, ma, crediamo, esauriente e comprensibile a tutti coloro che desiderano elevare il proprio livello di conoscenza nel campo della musica antica o che, piu semplicemente, necessitano di un'agevole guida che permetta di risolvere rapidamente eventuali dubbi di carattere storico e pratico.

The Trois airs variés for violin and piano belong to the small nucleus of compositions for this scoring which, in the Catalogo tematico, also includes the Cantabile in D major (M.S.109), the only original manuscript piece for violin and piano recently published in a critical edition, and the Quattro Notturni a quartetto (M.S.15). This ‘triptych’, whose authorship is unknown, is familiar thanks to the nineteenth-century editions Ricordi, Pacini and Hofmeister, the only evidence of the piece which is placed in the Catalogo tematico at n. 3 of the uncertain works (Section V, pp. 346-347), that is, those works whose authorship remains in doubt due to the lack of objectively valid documents. This placing does not categorically exclude the originality of the piece, at least as regards the violin part, and that Gustavo Carulli ‘completed’ them later by adding the piano part. Given that to date there is no evidence to deny Paganini’s authorship of the piece, we rely on the editorial tradition documented by the three publications mentioned above and, of course, on the style of the composition.
Regarding the instrumental aspect, the technical peculiarity is given by the exclusive use of the 4th string which must be transposed one tone above, in all three airs, including the variations. Concerning the piano part composed by Gustavo Carulli, it can only be said that it is simple and functional, aimed at highlighting the violin part, nothing more. Since the piano part is not original, the guitar has been thought of as the ideal instrument (as indeed is proved by Paganini’s considerable musical production for this scoring) to support the violin part and which is better suited to these small but pleasant pieces. In the transposition for guitar, however, the aim has been to include Gustavo Carulli’s musical lesson, where it is convincing, in other cases, however, the preference has been to find different solutions, while trying to remain within Paganini’s ‘style’ also as regards writing for the guitar. The present edition therefore seeks to be a plausible alternative to the previous editions, also in order to make these delightful but forgotten pieces more usable.

Juhani Nuorvala's (b. 1961) Variations ex Bene quondam for string orchestra was commissioned by the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra in 2017. Collaboration with the musicians led to experiments with microtonality. The work is based on a late medieval song from the Finnish collection Piae cantiones (Pious songs). The song is processed with various means of contemporary music. It also meets the New Age of California - the musical scene of the teenaged composer. The duration of the work is 25 minutes, and the performance material is available for hire from the publisher.
