Aleko

Oper in einem Akt nach dem Poem Die Zigeuner von Alexander Puschkin-The first of Rachmaninov's three operas Aleko is based on a poem 'The Gypsies' by Alexander Pushkin following the themes of unrequited love and sorrow. The opera was composed in the final years of Rachmainov's studies at the Moscow Conservatory as a graduation exam winning him the highest prize and securing his future as a prominent composer.
