Composer Daniel E. Gawthrop put the two directors in touch with each other, and a joint commission was conceived. Originally, the plan called for two completely separate premières, one at each church, but as the directors consulted on musical matters they decided that it would add an element of ecumenism and outreach to the project if they joined the two choirs together for both performances. Accordingly, on the first of the two Sundays the South Carolina Presbyterians joined the North Carolina Methodists in their Sunday morning services to sing the première of Behold This Mystery. On the following Sunday the travel was reversed for the second première. The involved choirs, congregations, clergy and directors all declared the project a triumph. Further performances followed, and the piece has now earned a place in the small but distinguished category called Twentieth Century Extended Works for Chorus and Orchestra Which Have Received More Than One Performance. Behold This Mystery is suitable anywhere that you might program a requiem, e.g., either in concert or within the context of a worship service. It lasts about 27 minutes in performance. Soprano and Baritone soloists are called for, although a Tenor may be substituted for the (rather high) Baritone part if needed. The choral parts are not terribly difficult but this is an extended work, probably equivalent to five or six typical anthems. Instrumental parts are not virtuosic; collegiate and professional ensembles should have no trouble preparing the piece with only a few rehearsals. Minimum order quantity: 8 copies. The year 1863 was very turbulent for Richard Wagner. Concert tours took him halfway across Europe and all the way to Moscow: ... one now heard my Valkyries at the confines of Asia. Yet at the end of the year, the overall balance was disappointing. Tristan und Isolde was not given its world premiere in Vienna, and work on Die Meistersinger had hardly advanced. Moreover, Wagner was in dire financial straits since the income from his artistically successful concerts only covered a fraction of the costs of his lavish lifestyle (he had moved into a luxurious residence in Penzing near Vienna in May). The meticulously annotated volume is illustrated with facsimiles and little known photos. Further enhancing the value of Volume 15 are a number of letters written by Wagner to his patroness Editha von Rahden in St. Petersburg and Moscow, which were hitherto practically unavailable and are published here for the first time.Wagner at the confines of Asia.

Among the works by Vivaldi preserved in a state unsatisfactory for performance there is a curious case. It is this motet written for“Alto Solo”, Invicti bellate, RV 628, which is already known to the public through editions, performances and recordings united by acommon shortcoming: a failure to realize that four entire pages of manuscript, amounting to something like 110-120 bars of music, are missing. This situation demands a definitive clarification: the motet is not performable in the state in which it has come down to us. Standing apart from a recent, over-indulgent fashion tending towards the reconstruction of damaged works at all costs, this edition deliberately presents the text in its imperfect state, with the provision, however, of a substantial historical introductionaimed particularly at establishing the motet's date and its position within the ample repertory of Vivaldi's sacred music.

It is important to remember that no one knows for sure if John Henry existed or is a tall tale created by writers. That is one of the things that makes the legend so intriguing.According to the legend, he grew to stand 6 feet tall, 200 pounds – a giant in that day.Though the story of John Henry sounds like the quintessential tall tale, it is certainly based, at least in part, on historical circumstance. There are disputes as to where the legend originates. Some place John Henry in West Virginia, while recent research suggests Alabama. Still, all share a similar back-story.In order to construct the railroads, companies hired thousands of men to smooth out terrain and cut through obstacles that stood in the way of the proposed tracks. One such chore that figures heavily into some of the earliest John Henry ballads is the blasting of the Big Bend Tunnel, more than a mile straight through a mountain in West Virginia.Steel-drivin’ men like John Henry used large hammers and stakes to pound holes into the rock, which were were then filled with explosives that would blast a cavity deeper and deeper into the mountain. In the folk ballads, the central event took place under such conditions. Eager to reduce costs and speed up progress, some tunnel engineers were using steam drills to power their way into the rock. According to the great American tall tales, on hearing of the machine, John Henry challenged the steam drill to a contest.
