“Allain Gaussin: Les céphéides, trio for violin, cello and piano - AL 30 735 For more than forty years, Allain Gaussin, fascinated by astrophysics, has found a major source of inspiration in observing the cosmos, as attest a number of works going from Vent solaire (1974) to Philae (2015), by way of L'Harmonie des sphères (2006). Ten years later, the 'Messiaen du Pays de la Meije' Festival hosted the first performance of the piano trio Les Céphéides. The musical journey enables the listener to enter a space 'just as impalpable and fragile' as that in which moves each Cepheid variable ' this star whose brightness varies over regular periods according to two elements: the diameter of the heavenly body and the temperature reading of its surface.

“Allain Gaussin, a pupil of Olivier Messiaen at the CNSM in Paris, and a veritable alchemist of sound, created a sensual and sparkling work that aims to induce in listeners the sort of 'internal awakening' that the Japanese refer to as Satori ' the title given to a piece for solo clarinet he wrote in 1998. Composed a decade later, Tokyo-City for solo Piano draws on the same inspiration, fuelled by several stays in Japan. Gaussin sets out to reproduce the various sensations he experienced during his walks around the Japanese megalopolis: a fear of being swallowed up by its vastness gives way to a bedazzlement in the face of a buzzing universe awash with harmonies and colours. The work follows a dual symmetrical structure (in terms of register and tempo): after an enigmatic start entrusted to the low notes of the piano, a musical figure gradually emerges from 'floating polyphonies', producing a veritable toccata which is slowly deformed, like an anaEmorphosis. Then, only a glimmering of crystal-clear harmonies remains, and the work ends sparsely on the highest notes of the piano.&rdquo.

Commissioned by Ensemble Sillages and IMEP de Namur, and premiered on 24 January 2009 by Isabel Soccoja (mezzo-soprano) and Aida Aragoneses (harp) at Auditorium du Quartz, Brest. The composer writes: 'Beyond Time is a sort of challenge to try and grasp the ungraspable, the fleeting, the inaccessible. The work consists of five sections that follow each other without a gap, revealing five allegories of Time: Virtual Instant, Mirror of Time, The Abyss of Time, Paradoxal Spirals, Beyond Time.'.
