American Prelude was commissioned by the United States Marine Band “The President's Own†and was composed in honor of the retirement of Colonel Jason K. Fettig, the 28th Director of the USMB. This short and energetic work features subtle hints to two of my favorite American composers, Aaron Copland and John Williams. The performance at Colonel Fettig's final concert with the Marine Band was the world premiere, given at the annual Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois on December 20st, 2023.

FANFARE PRELUDE: O GOD OUR HELP IN AGES PAST is based on the hymn-tune “St. Anne,†which was used by G.F.Handel in the Chandos anthem “O Praise the Lord,†and by J.S.Bach in his triple fugue in E-flat “The St. Anne Fugue.†James Curnow’s FANFARE PRELUDE: O GOD OUR HELP IN AGES PAST captures the thoughts of this magnificent hymn, which speaks of our country’s reliance upon God. The unusual 4/4 meter setting with artfully crafted re-harmonizations and lush counterpoint gives each listener cause to reflect on the importance and meaning of this melody to patriotic Americans everywhere.Inspired!

Here is a new major work for Spring programming, based on early American folk songs and hymns. Sacred Places explores the story of Christ's ministry, passion and resurrection, all emphasizing the locations where these great moments occurred: The Sea of Galilee, The Wedding at Cana, The Sermon on the Mount, Jerusalem, The Upper Room, The Garden of Gethsemane, Calvary and the Garden of Resurrection.
