Artemis is the Greek goddess of hunting and forests. In western art she is often pictured with deer, lions or bears with a bow in her hand. The tempo of this march is stately and the themes are “concertante†in character making Artemis best suited as a concert march rather than a street march. Technically this march is not too difficult although at times some dexterous fingering is necessary. The trio melody is especially lyrical and offers various sections within the band the possibility to show off their skill in playing the expressive melody. This excellent new concert march is sure to become a classic and be performed time and time again.

The inscription above Carter Pann's Emerald's on Artemis reads: A music box for Emerald Weber (born 18 June, 2010) on Morgan Black's harp Artemis. The title of this 2010 composition is a bit cryptic, but Artemis is the given name of harpist Morgan Black's instrument. The music is both out-and-out tender and exuberant, clearly celebrating the birth of Emerald, the first daughter of one of Pann's dear childhood friends. For advanced harpists._______________________________________Text on the scanned back cover:Composer/pianist Carter Pann (2016 Pulitzer Prize Finalist in Music) has written for and worked with musicians around the world, garnering performances by ensembles such as the London Symphony and City of Birmingham Symphony, the Tchaikovsky Symphony in Moscow, many radio symphonies around Europe, the Seattle Symphony, National Repertory Orchestra, the youth orchestras of New York and Chicago, and countless wind ensembles. He has written for Richard Stoltzman, the Antares Ensemble, the Capitol Saxophone Quartet, the West Coast Wind Quintet, the River Oaks Chamber Ensemble, and many concert pianists. Ancient Wonders Suite is a musical description of four of the wonders from the ancient world. Movement one describes the awe-inspiring grandeur of the Temple of Artemis located in Ephesus (present-day Turkey). Movement two depicts the majesty of the Great Lighthouse at Alexandria, Egypt. Movement three portrays the mystery and amazing craftsmanship used to build the Great Pyramid at Giza. Movement four represents the overwhelming feeling one might have felt gazing at the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Greece. Movements may be played in any order or as stand-alone works.Ancient Wonders Suite is a musical description of four of the wonders from the ancient world. Movement two depicts the majesty of the Great Lighthouse at Alexandria, Egypt, which lasted into the 14th century. Movement three portrays the mystery and amazing craftsmanship used to build the Great Pyramid at Giza, the only ancient wonder still standing today. Movement four represents the overwhelming feeling one might have felt gazing at the Statue of Zeus at Olympia, Greece. It concludes with a majestic feeling of victory, celebrating the Olympic spirit.Though written through contemporary means, this programmatic work seeks to remember the great architectural achievements of past generations. As a former director with the Bay Youth Orchestras of Virginia, it was truly an honor to write this piece commemorating the years of dedication and inspiration from my former colleague, Christina Morton.Movements were written with the traditional symphonic order in mind, but they may be played in any order or as stand-alone works. The timpani part is optional, but very highly recommended as it significantly adds to the majestic nature of these works.

This concert march does not begin with flourishing trumpets orloud tutti sounds: Jupiter opens refreshingly with percussioninstruments and the “high woodwindsâ€. This original introductionis followed by a broad melodic theme and gradually features otherinstrumental groups. Thus section by section the entire band ispresented. A fantastic entrance to the concert for all players!

Debussy composed this breathtaking unaccompanied work in 1913, and it became the first solo work for the Bohm flute and the first solo work by a major composer since C.P.E. Bach almost 150 years earlier!
The music allows wide latitude for interpretation and can really show off the musical imagination of the performer.
The great French flautist Marcel Moyse is credited with adding phrasing and barlines to his friend Debussy's new work.
In classical mythology, Syrinx was a nymph and a follower of Artemis, known for her chastity. Pursued by the amorous Greekgod Pan, she ran to a river's edge and asked for assistance from the river nymphs. In answer, she was transformed into hollow water reeds that made a haunting sound when the god's frustrated breath blew across them. Pan cut the reeds to fashion the first set of pan pipes, which were thereafter known as syrinx.
This work of 2 1/2 minutes for advanced performers can add a new dimension to your recital, as it is often performed offstage.
The sample performance was recorded by Ralph Sauer in May 2012.
