Après être restée à l?affiche pendant plus de trois mois à New York l?opérette s?est installée à l?Opéra Comique de Londres en 1880 pour 363 représentations.Ruth la gouvernante du jeune Frédéric est chargée de faire en sorte qu?il devienne pilote des mers. Hélas Ruth un tantinet dure d?oreille confond les termes pilote et pirate et met Frédéric en apprentissagechez une bande de charmants pirates orphelins. À ses vingt et un ans il est libéré de son contrat d?apprentissage et peut réintégrer un modèle de société respectable avec pour obligation de dénoncer ses anciens compagnons. Ruth révèle alors que Frédéric est né une année bissextile un 29 février : il n?a donc en réalité que cinq ans ! Il restera donc apprenti pirate jusqu?à son vingt et unième anniversaire. Entre temps Frédéric s?éprend de Mabel une des nombreuses filles du Major-Général Stanley. L?opérette touche à sa fin et les quiproquos s?enchaînent. Les pirates le Major-Général et toutes ses filles se côtoient dans une joyeuse cacophonie à laquelle un sergent de police timoré réussit à mettre un terme en invoquant la loyauté envers la reine Victoria. Et tout le monde cède.Vers la fin de l?Acte II Frédéric et Mabel chantent un duo d?amour d?une beauté envoûtante ?Ah leave me not to pine alone and desolate? (?Ah ne me laisse pas languir et désespérer?). Philip Sparke en a réalisé un arrangement pour Flûte Traversière et Saxophone Alto (ou Clarinette).

The Te Deum Laudamus is a single movement Choral work and was Sullivan’s last completed composition. In one movement the composer moves through all the component parts of the mass drawing them together seamlessly and expressing Sullivan’s own deeply felt faith.Composer Arthur Sullivan is known the world over for his operatic collaborations with W S Gilbert including H M S Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance among many others. But Sullivan was also a composer of many other works among them operas Orchestral works ballets and hymns and church pieces.Among his church works Sullivan is best known for his hymn Onward Christian Soldiers and the theme of that hymn isincorporated in this Te Deum. Sullivan wrote the work on request for a Thanksgiving Service held in St Paul’s Cathedral at the close of the Boer War in South Africa. It received its first performance in 1902 in the presence of King Edward VII and other members of the royal family. That the song of thanksgiving was composed nearly two years before the end of the war perhaps demonstrated Sullivan’s patriotism.

or The Slave of Duty-In Gilbert And Sullivan's 'The Pirates of Penzance' our hero is Frederick a young man apprenticed to a pirate king because of a misunderstanding - his nanny misheard his parent's request to apprentice him to a pilot. On the verge of turning his back on the ill-adjusted swashbuckling lifestyle and crew Frederick finds himself torn between his love for Mable his desire to eliminate the scourge of piracy and his sense of duty - the subtitle for the show is 'The Slave of Duty'. Of course the final twist is another identity confusion - just when all seems lost the pirates are bound over to surrender - because they're all orphaned noblemen. They regain their places in the House ofLords. This Vocal score contains all the dialogue and historical notes by Marie Eggold; it is edited by Bryceson Treharne.
