Between the 1890s and World War II the axis of Paris - Prague was found to be incredibly attractive. Its attraction lay in sharing mutual political and social values and led to the demand of certain cultural and artistic unity. The aim of this book is to raise questions regarding the musical works of this period, and discuss which musical works show this 'affinity in choice'. During the course of the 20th century 'cultural polarities' started blurring, and paradoxically enough it was not one of the Slav countries, but Paris where Czech composers reinvented, through the Neo-Classical style ( mainly Stravinski's) their 'Eastern pole': light and archaic themes, a specific register of folk and trivial music, and the preference for creative spontaneity in compositions. Which features in the direction taken by Bohuslav Martinu can be regarded as typical of this tendency? What were the positions of the other Czech composers such as Leos Janacek, Alois Haba, Karel Husa, Jaroslav Jezek and others, and artists working in the musical, artistic or literal fields, for instance Arne Hosek, Milada Souckova, Jiri Kolar, Milan Slavicky, Milan Kundera, within this context? The analysis of these questions regarding the whole of the 20th century is completed with several so far unpublished or unknown sources.

“For as long as there are poets there will be songs. If someone was to put on my tomb: 'Here lies Francis Poulenc, musician to Apollinaire and Éluard:' that really would be my finest claim to fame,†the composer declared in 1945. Right from boyhood his attraction to poetry was practically equal to his love of music. And in fact the young Poulenc took to song-writing quite naturally, starting in 1919. Poulenc compiled a catalogue of 150 songs, a body of works of consistently high quality, containing great diversity, that marks him out as the last major exponent in this genre. These editions belong to “Musique vocale française,†a series devoted to French vocal repertoire – both in original and transposed key – designed for students and teachers as well as professionals; they include original poems and English translations.

A red covered bridge spans the Big Bureau Creek just north of Princeton, Illinois. This local attraction has served as the inspiration for this lyrical composition. The serene setting brings to mind the many people who have crossed that bridge in simpler times, and the stories of their lives. This piece hopes to capture those moments of reflection, joy, children playing, and powerful moments of resolve. This title available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Dreams is one of the great Van Halen songs now transcribed for string orchestra. As a string player, I was enamored with Eddie Van Halen. He was a big influence on me while I was studying at Juilliard. I purposely lowered the key to A major for better playability. The tempo is brisk, yet very attainable. The upbeat and positive posture of this composition was a big attraction to me as a musician, and it was an honor for me to show great respect to the song and our string world! The play-along tracks feature my personal band! (4:35).

Right at the beginning of the overture, Telemann comes up with a surprising idea. After the -'bare' entry of the wind section, the string tutti do not join in the playing until the third bar. The 'harlequinade' often appearing in Telemann's overture suites obtains its attraction not least from syncopes and from a permanent change of tone colour. The 'Espagniol' whose title prom-ises a bit of urbanity turns out to be a saraband, the 'Bourree en Trompette' justifies its name by the tone repetitions typical of trumpet music. In the context of the whole, the 'Sommeille', a harmonically unusual movement in C minor, is almost a piece across the border. Even in this gently rocking piece, Telemann is not at a loss for unobtrusive wit when he lets the upper parts die down shortly before the end, only a single bass tone represents the last chord.

The Concertino IV for oboe and string orchestra was composed in 1982-83 and dedicated to the renowned Swiss oboist Jean-Paul Goy. Its three short movements, following the traditional tempo order, mirror Farkas's attraction to Classical order and harmony. The musical language is modern and personal, however, and allows the soloist to exhibit his virtuosity.

“A fragment can develop an enormous power of attraction for a composer, for the empty spaces create room for speculation and present incomplete ideas. 'Parafonia' is by no means a completion; rather, it is a very subjective continuation of a narration which makes a point of the fragmentary. Thus the material is exposed, newly spliced and repeatedly illuminated in different ways. Mozart himself took up the beginning of the adagio melody in his motet 'Ave verum' – this continued development is also narrated. And Liszt is greeted in the coda with his Ave verum homage 'A la Chapelle Sixtine'.†(Johannes X. Schachtner).

The suite from the cycle 'Ploner Musiktag' (1932) was structured according to the exact instrumentation directions of the composer and completed with a percussion part ad lib. Particular attraction is caused by the different instrumentation of the four movements which, how-ever, takes into consideration the conditions of school practice.

Chaconne (2016), for string quartet, was commissioned by the Daedalus Quartet to celebrate its 15th anniversary. The commission was supported by New Music USA, made possible by annual program support and/or endowment gifts from Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Helen F. Whitaker Fund, and Aaron Copland Fund for Music. My music has a substantial history with Daedalus. I composed the Third String Quartet (2008) for them, and subsequently they performed my three string quartets on several occasions and recorded them brilliantly on Bridge Records (Bridge 9352: Music of Fred Lerdahl, vol. 3). Chaconne is in one movement lasting 19 minutes. It is effectively my fourth string quartet. Quartets 1-3 form a unified cycle lasting 70 minutes. When I finished the cycle, I thought I would never write again for the medium; yet I could not resist the opportunity of working again with Daedalus. The issue was how to compose another string quartet unrelated to the earlier cycle. The solution came from my solo cello piece There and Back Again (2010), which was based on a four-bar variation pattern from a 17th-century chaconne. Unlike the asymmetrical phrases and expanding variations of much of my music, the chaconne form requires symmetrical phrases and strictly periodic variations. I wished to work again with these symmetries but on a larger scale. Chaconne also differs in character and expression from the three-quartet cycle. The cycle is inward and intense, a kind of psychological excavation. Chaconne is, for the most part, transparent and playful. Many of its textures emerge from little canons, not completely unlike the rounds that children sing. Any composer who writes in chaconne form (one thinks above all of the last movement of Bach's D minor violin partita and the finale of Brahms's Fourth Symphony) is confronted with the challenge of how to create a larger form out of a constantly repeating pattern. My Chaconne grows from paired antecedent-consequent phrases, each variation lasting eight bars. The 50 variations group into three large rotations, forming three arcs of tension and relaxation, with subtle parallel connections across the rotations. Notwithstanding my attraction to chaconne form, I purposefully disguised its symmetries and periodicities in order to build an overall dramatic shape. Fred Lerdahl.

This tonal neo-baroque piece sets itself the task to perform counterpoint techniques (theme, inversion, crab etc.) practically in an easily understandable way within the framework of the school. Heinz Benker, who worked as school music teacher in Regensburg for a long time, thinks, as a practical person, of the possibilities of school and amateur orchestras. Particular attraction is held by the use of percussion instruments (also Orff instruments) which concertize with the strings as equal partners.
