Balkan Melodies for Accordion

This is a collection of 42 well-known Balkan songs arranged for easy to intermediate accordion. Chords are provided to facilitate improvising. Includes a familiar and interesting Hungarian czardas.

Petar Ralchev's book Balkan Accordion extends the instrument's rhythmic tonal and harmonic spectrum. It contains a diverse range of well-known instrumental pieces songs and dances with a distinct Eastern European flavour and with catchy melodies and rich ornamentation. For each piece the author has written a short introduction on its background and characteristics. The pieces are intermediate level and the notation is clear and easy to read.

The pieces are selected from Turkey, Hungary, Croatia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina. Included are fascinating historical notes about the music and descriptions of traditional instruments. Special playing techniques are explained and performance tips will help players achieve an authentic sound. All this, together with the CDs of demonstration performances and play-along tracks is sure to be inspirational.

Programme note Recall was composed as a tribute to my recollections of the vitality of Balkan folklore – as perceived by an urban Scandinavian. So the listener will listen in vainfor any “Authencity” of material. The slow introduction and the fast main movement unfold freely in their own way which never is far from adopting sounds melodies and rhythms which are far more “1960s inDenmark” than “perennial folklore”: it is an entertainment (recall) based on childhood memories seen (heard) through a grown up´s eyes (ears).
