Balkanya, a suite in three parts composed by Jan Van der Roost, was commissioned by the Music School of Gaillon - Aubevoye (France) for the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of its creation. Jan Van der Roost dedicated the piece to the director of the school: Thierry Patel.As in his earlier work, Puszta, the composer makes no use of existing dances or themes in these three Balkan dances. This high-spirited suite takes its own approach to the folk music of the Balkan countries and is characterized by unique changes in tempo and spirit. Woodwinds, brass and percussion all have equal parts, making this suite attractive and enjoyable for the entire band.C’est la demande de l’École de Musique de Gaillon - Aubevoye et deson directeur, Thierry Patel, que Jan Van der Roost composa cette suite en trois mouvements pour célébrer le 20ème anniversaire de la création de cette École de Musique. Comme ce fut le cas pour Puszta, ces trois danses des Balkans sont des compositions originales ; il ne s’agit donc pas d’arrangements de danses ou de thèmes existants. Des changements de tempi et d’ambiance caractérisent cette suite enlevée et très personnelle dans son approche de la musique traditionnelle des Balkans. Bois, cuivres et percussions sont mis tour tour en valeur, ce qui rend cette suite particulièrement attractive etagréable jouer pour toute la formation.

This suite was written in the style of traditional Russian folk music, but does not use existing melodies or themes as its basis. The colourful and varied work contains a number of surprising turns, but also familiar sounds. After the introduction, a kind of Trepak follows ? a fairly quick dance with attractive themes. The second movement (Garovot) is predominantly slow and conveys some melancholy, although, during a more dynamic passage the passion flares up again. Finally, the Troika takes us along in a reindeer sleigh through a grand snowy landscape. This is a wonderful tribute to the music of Eastern Europe in the style of some of the great Russian masters.Net als Rikudim, Puszta en Balkanya, eveneens van de hand van Jan Van der Roost, is deze kleurige en gevarieerde suite geschreven in de stijl van traditionele Russische muziek, zonder dat bestaande melodieën of thema’sals basis hebben gediend. Tanczi bevat een paar verrassende wendingen, maar ook vertrouwde klanken. Na de inleiding volgt een soort Trepak: een tamelijk snelle dans met fraaie thema’s. Het tweede deel (Garovot) isoverwegend langzaam en ademt enige melancholie, al laait tijdens een dynamischer middengedeelte de passie weer op. De Troika neemt ons ten slotte mee in een rendierslee door een weids sneeuwlandschap. In 2014, Philharmonic Winds OSAKAN (Japan) celebrated its fifteenth anniversary for which this work was composed. From the very beginning, Yoshihoro Kimura has been the artistic leader of the ensemble. Jan Van der Roost became the band’s first guest conductor in 2013. In this spectacular work the composer looks back at one of his most famous earlier works ‘Apollo', and to Adolphe Sax, the Belgian inventor of the saxophone. In 2014 vierde het Philharmonic Winds Osakan, een orkest uit Japan, haar vijftiende verjaardag. Speciaal hiervoor componeerde Jan Van der Roost dit werk. Al vanaf dag één van het bestaan van het orkest is Yoshihoro Kimura de artistiek leider van het orkest. Jan Van der Roost was in 2013 de eerste gastdirigent. In dit spectaculaire werk blikt de componist terug op één van zijn beroemdste vroegere werken, Apollo, maar ook op Adolphe Sax, de Belgische uitvinder van de saxofoon.Dieses Werk wurde 2014 anlässlich des 15-jährigen Jubiläums der Philharmonic Winds OSAKAN (Japan) komponiert. Yoshihiro Kimura war von Beginn an künstlerischer Leiter des Ensembles, Jan Van der Roost 2013 der erste Gastdirigent. In diesem eindrucksvollen Werk blickt der Komponist auf Apollo, eines seiner berühmtesten früheren Werke, zurück, und erinnert an Adolphe Sax, den belgischen Erfinder des Saxophons. Cette œuvre fut composée en 2014 pour le quinzième anniversaire de l’ensemble Philharmonic Winds OSAKAN (Japon). Yoshihoro Kimura est leur directeur artistique depuis la création et Jan Van der Roost est devenu leur premier chef d’orchestre invité en 2013. Dans ce morceau spectaculaire le compositeur fait allusion l’une de ses premières œuvres les plus connues, Apollo, et Adolphe Sax, l’inventeur belge du saxophone. Nel 2014 la Filarmonica di fiati OSAKAN (Giappone) ha festeggiato i quindici anni di vita per i quali è stato composto questo brano. Sin dall’inizio, Yoshihoro Kimura è stato la guida artistica dell’ensemble. Jan Van der Roost è diventato il primo direttore ospite della banda nel 2013. In questo brano spettacolare il compositore guarda indietro ad uno dei suoi più famosi primi lavori ‘Apollo’, e a Adolphe Sax, l’inventore belga del sassofono.

Mercury is a concert march composed in a typically British idiom. In 1990, Jan Van der Roost wrote this piece on the occasion of the 15-year anniversary of his own band: Brass Band Midden Brabant. Like many British marches, the main theme is written in a minor key. Powerful and virtuoso themes characterize the first part of this march, while the trio melody is much more melodical, offering the tenor register to display its lyrical skills. Follows a dynamic passage for trombones and trumpets/cornets, leading to a grandioso version of the main trio melody and thus concluding this march in a magnificent way.Een stevige concertmars met een trio van een ongekende schoonheid. The Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten-Innsbruck (Austria) invited Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost to write a work to mark the bicentenary of the Tyrolean fight for freedom, which was settled in 1809. Various musical elements reflect this historical event. First, a hymn-like section rings out, based on melodic fragments from the ‘Tiroler Landeshymne’ (by Leopold Knebelsberger), which intertwine in a counterpoint-like arrangement. The second passage is more bellicose in character, and mirrors the fight of the Tyroleans - under the inspiring leadership of freedom fighter Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) - against Bavarian, French and Italian troops. Next, a broad, chorale-style melodyappears again: here, the imposing beauty of nature in Tyrol, and the amiable, lively temperament of the people who live in this mountainous region, are glorified.This is neither a programmatic work around an historical reconstruction, nor a politically inspired work: it is a combination of factual and cultural components, with an artistic and sonorous character. The use of the flugelhorn in particular gives Tirol Terra Fortis its ‘couleur locale’: for this beautiful instrument can invariably be found in the Austrian wind band. The commissioning music society had therefore specifically asked the composer to incorporate the instrument in this work. Le dessin belliqueux du second mouvement rappelle la lutte des Tyroliens contre les troupesbavaroises, françaises et italiennes, l’instigation du combattant de la liberté Andreas Hofer (1767-1810). Enfin, on retrouve une mélodie de style choral qui évoque avec ferveur l’imposante beauté des paysages du Tyrol, et transmet la chaleur et le caractère jovial des habitants de cette région montagneuse. Tirol Terra Fortis n’est ni une reconstruction historique en musique (autrement dit, une œuvre programme), ni une œuvre politique. Son contenu repose sur une combinaison d’éléments factuels et culturels qui s’expriment travers une trame artistique très expressive. Le bugle a su conserver la fidélité des Orchestres d’Harmonie autrichiens. Intégré dans la texture orchestrale de cette œuvre de commande la demande expresse de la formation dédicataire, le bugle donne une couleur locale la composition et enrichit la large gamme des couleurs sonores de l’Orchestre d’Harmonie. La Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten-Innsbruck (Austria) ha invitato il compositore belga Jan Van der Roost a scrivere un'opera per celebrare il bicentenario dell’Insorgenza tirolese, che ebbe luogo nel 1809. Arsenal was composed for the 50th anniversary of the 'Harmonie van het Spoorwegarsenaal' [railroad arsenal], based in Mechelen (Belgium). Rather a stately concert march, it has beautiful themes and a broad melody in the trio. It waspremiered in the Mechelen Cultural Center on the 11th of May 1996 during the solemn ceremony, opening the anniversary year and conducted by the composer. This noble concert march was commissioned by the Musikverein Heek, Germany, for its 125th anniversary. In German mythology, Donar is the God of Thunder, and in the area around Heek, ‘Thunder Mountain’ is a household name. The work begins with a stately opening, followed by a beautiful trio melody with rhythmical and energetic sections. This is a march that features and showcases a range of musical aspects. It is perfect as an opener or to create variety during a concert.Deze nobele concertmars werd geschreven in opdracht van de Duitse Musikverein Heek, ter gelegenheid van het 125-jarig bestaan van deze vereniging in 2017. De première vond onder leiding van de componist op 2 september plaats in de gemeente Heek. Donar is de dondergod uit de Germaanse mythologie en er is een specifieke reden voor de keuze van deze naam: in de regio rond Heek is de ‘Donderberg’ een begrip, zodat deze titel zeer toepasselijk is. Het lage register komt een paar keer duidelijk op de voorgrond om de donder en bliksem weer te geven. Het werk begint echter met een plechtstatige ‘entree’ een godheid waardig! De triomelodie daarentegen is naar de loffelijkegewoonte van Jan Van der Roost zangerig en melodieus. Kortom: dit is een mars die diverse muzikale aspecten bevat en etaleert. The orchestration of NOBILITAS is full of warmth and sonority, illustrating the dignified character of the piece. it seems to emanate the solemnity and nobility of an ‘éminence grise’ such as Yoshihiro Kimura, on whom’s character the composer was inspired by.
