Commissioned by the Japan Band Clinic Committee of Yamaha for the Nemu Band Directors Clinic in Nemu no Sato May 18-20 1997.The surprising title of this work is an indication of its content. By combining the somewhat similar names ‘Nemu no Sato’ and ‘Susato’ into a new word Jan Van der Roost has produced a significant and interesting subject. The Yamaha corporation has extensive facilities in Nemu no Sato Japan including a concert hall recording studios hotel and so on. Concerts workshops clinics and other events are held here including the annual Nemu Band Directors Clinic which consists of numerous musical events. Jan Van der Roost served as guest conductor andspeaker in 1994. He was invited again for the 1997 clinic this time with a composition assignment. The difficulty level of his new piece was to be Grade 2 - 3 bands. With this in mind Mr. Van der Roost strove to create a renaissance-like sound. Simultaneously he wished to create a tribute to Tielman Susato who like Jan Van der Roost lived and worked in Antwerp in the 16th century. The first performance of Nemu-Susato was conducted by the composer performed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Band and took place during the Nemu Band Directors Clinic on May 19 1997.

By October that year a newly formed band John Miles and Co had released their debut single Highfly but their greatest hit which stormed the British charts in March 1976 was Music.

The Pines of Rome is Respighi's most notable and durably popular composition and this transcription for band by Guy Duker has long been considered a staple in the literature. With its specific musical imagery and brilliantscoring this is truly a magnificent and rewarding work for mature bands. Novorossiyek Chimes-Although considered to be a small work in Shostakovich's catalog “The Fire of Eternal Glory” was one of his best known works in the USSR. A recording of the piece originally written for the war memorial inNovorossiyek has been playing continuously at that location since its construction in 1960 possibly making it one of the most frequently played pieces of classical music in existence. James Curnow's arrangement for young bandbegins with delicate sounds from the bells and builds to a tremendous climax for full band. Dur: 2:30

(Quien Sera)-Recording artist Michael Bublé helped to make this Latin standard popular once again. Featuring a smooth and infectious groove and interesting percussion writing this is a natural choice for young bands.

Ancient Desert Drone was composed for Orchestra in 1940 at the request of Percy Grainger who encouraged the idea of using a single pitch drone throughout the work (similar to Grainger's own The ImmovableDo) and to whom the piece is dedicated. While the work suggests an Eastern charm with its distinctive mode and primitive rhythms Cowell himself stated there was no particular programmatic intent.
