Karelia Suite, Opus 11 is a concert suite taken from an 11-movement work that Sibelius composed using Finnish folk music. The two selections in this arrangement are the Intermezzo and Alla Marcia and have a naive peasant feel to them with their simplicity. Karelia was one of the composer's favorite parts of Finland.Intermezzo is a bouncy march in Allegro as is the Alla Marcia which has a few key change surprises, adding a real kick to the movement.All parts are in bass clef and the parts are appropriate for moderately advanced performers. This arrangement is about 9 minutes in length.

There is no greater virtue befitting to Mankind than faith, which manifested, doth friendship firmly bind. This verse was written by Simon Dach, the leader of the Konisberg circle of poets, during the Thirty Years' War, and a little later was set to music by Heinrich Albert. The anxieties and tribulations of the period are reflected in the songs and make it particularly applicable to us as survivors of the strife and disorder of our own day. Thus, Harald Genzmer has adopted it as the cantus firmus of his Prologue for Orchestra, in which we are reminded of it throughout, in its original form, in inversion, fanfare introduction, funeral march, intermezzo and final allegro.

The earliest and now obsolete version of this piece (first performed in Heidelberg, 1949) was scored for actors and orchestra. This revised version of 1964 has recast the actors' parts into roles for singers.In addition, a scaled-down orchestration was made to suit performances in small theatres. The Magic Theatre is suitable as one part of a triptych, of which A Country Doctor forms the centre and The End of a World the third part.The Magic Theatre can still be performed with actors: for a production given at the Schiller Theatre in Berlin, on 30 September 1965 at the Berlin Festwochen, Henning Brauel made a version for a small ensemble designed to be performed in small theatres. As aspiring fingerpicking guitarists started expanding their horizons from folk, blues, and ragtime in the 1970s, it was only logical to look towards early jazz tunes as a vast source for new possibilities. For one thing, they could follow the same evolutionary path from ragtime to jazz that had been taken by pianists such as Jelly Roll Morton and Harlem stride players like James P. Johnson and Fats Waller. These musicians all composed in a variety of styles, but their most ambitious piano solos expanded on the classic ragtime format developed by the likes of Scott Joplin, James Scott, and Joseph Lamb, using several strains that usually changed keys at least once. Morton, the self-proclaimed inventor of jazz, would record versions of tunes like King Porter Stomp and The Original Jelly Roll Blues that are similar to straight ragtime performances, and others where there is lots of room left for embellishment and jazz improvisation. The present collection is a bonanza for guitarists who want to tackle advanced arrangements along the lines of ragtime but featuring jazz age harmonies from the playing of Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, WC Handy, the Original Dixieland Jazz Band and other early jazz legends.
