Bells Are Ringing

This is a beautiful and lyrical Cornet solo with band accompaniment. It conjures up a pastoral scene with distant bells ringing The piece is actually named after a pub in Lower Peover near Knutsford in Cheshire.

Sorensen writes: 'The title The Bells Of Vineta refers to the journey through Sweden in Selma Lagerlöf?s book The Wonderful Adventures of Nils Holgersen in which Vineta is the city under a curse. Situated off the Gotland cost Vineta only appears from the water once every hundred years and then sinks into the sea again. However my work does not relate programmatically to the myth; it is simply the expression of associations with ringing bells sinking into the sea. a sense of 'pastness' prevails in and beyond this piece.'

The Millennium Bridge describes the pedestrian’s journey across this wonderful new landmark bridge over the Thames starting at the imposing Tate Modern crossing the busy river and onwards to St. Paul’s Cathedral with its bells ringing out over the great city. London Eye is an incredibly large ferris wheel situated on the South Bank of the River Thames. This movement depicts a ‘flight’ on this riverside wheel at the top of which the panoramic view of London is breath-taking and the expanse of the music is a suitable depiction ofthe view. As with all modern cities London is over-crowded with motor vehicles. London is the first major city in Europe to adopt a Congestion Charge and this piece (with its stop and go traffic lights) is both racy and comical. Piano-Bent Sørensen THE SHADOWS OF SILENCE For piano Programme Note The Shadows of Silence (2003-2004)Quite some time ago I heard - through a conversation in a mobile phone - a wonderful concert of ringing church bells from an European capital. I found it very hard to concentrate about the conversation because I was so engrossed by the chaotic world of bell sound. The night after I dreamt that the sound of those low singing bells was rising up from a piano in a huge empty concert hall. That experience became the starting point for my piano piece 'The Shadows of Silence'. But before the piece gets to the ringing bells itmoves through a landscape of shadows - Shadows of the silence before the bells - Silence before the storm - Shadows of melodies which all the time leaves traces even in the short passages of storm. After the passage with the low ringing bells the shadows of silence returns melted in to a lament which are sending two regards. One to two small beautiful - not very well known - bars by Mozart and one to the sextet in my own opera 'Under the Sky'.'The Shadows of Silence' was commissioned by The Carnegie Hall Corporation and is dedicated to Leif Ove Andsnes
