In volume 1 of the New Schutz Edition Friedrich Schoneich presented the Historia der Geburt Jesu Christi. He had to accept that one source was considered lost. The volume was published in 1955 and, of course, Schoneich edited it within the framework of the musicological standards of his time. For her new edition, Bettina Varwig has now been able to take all known sources into account including the first print, copies of parts of the work which have come down to us in the Duben Collection, as well as the score copy from the music archive of the Berlin Sing-Akademie, which had been known only from fragmentary copies until it had been returned from Kiew. This enables a fresh view of the Historia on how it presumably was performed. The edition maintains the original note values and generally follows the editorial principles of the New Edition of the Complete Works. The Introduction centrally deals with the question how the Historia was performed at Christmas 1660 in the Dresden Schlosskirche and how it can be realised today. Also the scoring for singers and instruments (Evangelist movements versus concertante movements) is being appropriately discussed. Three appendices enable a greater understanding of the source traditions of the work which are documented in detail in the Critical Commentary and whose readings are critically examined there.Replaces BA1709.

Throughout his life, Antonio Vivaldi wrote almost thirty instrumental works that use the cello as a solo instrument. Vivaldi knew how to tailor his music to the cello and in doing so, helped to establish this still young instrument in the music of that time. The Concerto RV 531 is the only double concerto in Vivaldi’s uvre for two solo violoncellos. The two solo parts take centre stage with virtuosic passages but lie on the instrument so well that they can be comfortably mastered by advanced students. The edition is based on the careful evaluation of Vivaldi’s autograph score which is the main source and several inconsistencies found in previous editions have been clarified. At the same time the edition allows for a flexible realisation of this concerto: it can be performed by a full tutti orchestra or by one performer per part. The cello part in the basso continuo group can be played by orchestral cellists or by the soloists.

Antonio Vivaldi’s twelve concertos op. 4 known by the name of “La Stravaganza†were first mentioned as a collection of “Concerti a 4†in the 1711 Foreword of “L’Estro Armonico†op. 3. Their publication had to wait until 1716, when Estienne Roger issued them in two volumes of six concertos each. However, unlike the original announcement, “La Stravaganza†is more than a collection of concertos for solo violin with string accompaniment: in five of the concertos the soloist is joined by a second solo violin or even by a solo violoncello (Concerto No. 7).The many reprints of “La Stravaganza†bear witness to its popularity and widespread dissemination well into the 1730s. Besides the surviving prints, there is a significant body of handwritten sources containing alternative versions for seven of the concertos. Some of these manuscripts stem from the music library of Johann Georg Pisendel. This edition of “La Stravaganza†is not only the first scholarly-critical edition, it is also the only complete edition available. In addition to the twelve concertos handed down in the Roger edition, Bärenreiter offers an additional concerto in full score, piano reduction and parts contained in the 1728 print issued by the English publishers Walsh & Hare, as well as alternative versions (without viola) found in handwritten sources for Concertos No. 6 (Volume 1) and No. 11 (Volume 2).

Nocturno Virtuoso Adolf Busch was not only a phenomenal violinist from the first half of the 20th century, but he also wrote musical pieces in a tremendous variety of genres for concert performances as well as home use. Busch's brother Hermann was a cellist and member of the acclaimed Busch Quartet; his first wife Frieda played the clarinet. It was to her that Busch dedicated the larger part of the four pieces gathered here under opus 53 and composed between 1927-1943 for clarinet and various string scorings. One exception is the profusely rich and charming Serenade op. 53b, which Busch dedicated to his friend Hans Ritz in Basel. The scoring and compositional techniques of the work hint at Reger, Mozart and even beyond, whereby it is undeniable that Busch is firmly rooted in the musical tradition. Moreover, virtuosity and melodic lines in the Nocturno are influenced by Busch's prolific experience as an instrumental soloist. Adolf Busch wrote 70 works with opus numbers and about as many without, which were intended for home use. Rediscovered and increasingly performed, Busch's music is now conquering the place it deserves in concert programs. The present edition is part of Breitkopf's series of chamber music by Adolf Busch.

Home music-making in polyphonic harmonyAdolf Busch did not write his Five Canons in Harmony for concert use, but for home music-making in the true meaning of the word, since he dedicated them to his dear Hedwig at Christmas 1949. Busch's second wife played the flute, and it was thus perfectly plausible that she gave the world premiere of the canon in a family circle. The instrumental scoring is rich in variants and is thus kept open; just as our scoring can be shaped with great flexibility and a profusion of variants, so does ours allow a random combination of C and B-flat instruments..
