Saggi di Giacomo Albert, Nicola Bernardini, Remy Campos, Michael Dias, Mylene Gioffredo, Jonathan Goldman, Robert Hasegawa, Joel V. Hunt, Anna Stoll Knecht, Benjamin M. Korstvedt, Federico Lazzaro, Alessandra Carlotta Pellegrini, Camille Rondeau, Friedemann SallisA growing number of music scholars have lately shifted their attention from musical works to the creative processes that produced them. The study of these processes serves as a springboard for interdisciplinary research that goes beyond the traditional boundaries of musical philology. These recent orientations adopt a heuristic approach to musical craft in the composer's workshop and build on the rich heritage of sketch studies, while incorporating psychological, anthropological, sociological, historical and analytical methods. The study of the creative process in music also seeks to adapt the apparatus of literary critique genetique. Scholars of creative process also regularly turn their attention to artistic situations in which sketches and scores may not be available as loci of investigation and seek to adapt the tools of creativity studies to research not only on composers, but also performers, improvisers, and even artistic directors, recording engineers, radio producers, commissioners or any other actor in the musical field.Texts and Beyond offers new orientations in the study of the creative process in music. The essays included here show a particular interest in unfinished works and in the logic of their completion, as well as in the creative interaction of music coupled with other arts. In twelve chapters and an Afterword, this volume explores a wide variety of topics, including compositions by Anton Bruckner, Gustav Mahler, Charles Koechlin, Giacinto Scelsi, Henry Brant, Luciano Berio, Brian Ferneyhough, Jacques Hetu and Jose Evangelista, as well as extending to the realm of ballet staging, composing for the cinema and video art.

Essays by Marie-Helene Benoit-Otis, Jean-Christophe Branger, Michel Duchesneau, Stephan Etcharry, Sarah Gutsche-Miller, Jacinthe Harbec, Karen Henson, Mara Lacche, Ralph P. Locke, Anne Monjaret, Michela Niccolai, Luca Levi SalaThe crisis of dramaturgical systems in the age of European modernism, between the end of the nineteenth century and the First World War, provoked the creation of a range of original artistic solutions until the 1930s which broke apart traditional musical genres. The quest for new forms of expression thus becomes a defining feature in modernist art. Composers, riding the wave of momentum built first in literature and the fine arts, blurred the boundaries between high and low styles, and it is in this co-existence, inherent to the new forms, that musical production found new life. Theatre studies have pinpointed this desire for artistic experimentation with Paris at its centre, the city of light, that cultural meeting ground and formidable catalyst of artistic trends. The visual spectacle produced during the forty years (approximately 1890-1930) covered in this volume has therefore been analysed in a number of different ways, deriving from the vast panorama of cultural history, interrogating theatrical materials not only from the standpoint of the <>, but also by investigating the links between high and low, mediatised culture. Musicological research applied to high art genres (song, opera, all genres of instrumental music) does not yet seem to have taken these hybrid spectacles which modify forms and genres in search of new musical and dramatic solutions into consideration, except in a few rare cases. On the other hand, new impetus has been given by a renewed interest in popular chanson and ballet. In this current volume, we have chosen to interrogate the spectacular element, that is to say the performance, as 'a text', equal in status to the music and the literary text. Therefore, the different subject areas proposed in the following chapters reveal a lesser importance of the subject material set to music by composers but a greater willingness, at the centre of this aesthetic renewal, to try out new musical forms or to adapt traditional structures to new dramatic ends.

Following sensationally acclaimed premiere performances in Vienna, The Creation was published in several languages and by various publishing houses, including Breitkopf & Hartel in Leipzig. We now know that a continuo instrument was used for Haydn's oratorio as premiered in Vienna. The supplementary continuo part enables an historically accurate reproduction for the first time: the harpsichord (and, increasingly, the pianoforte) fulfilled the important continuo function in the orchestras of the time.In the late 18th century, Joseph Haydn composed a choral work - The Creation - which set the standard for the sacred oratorio genre that stood long after the Viennese classical era and far beyond the boundaries of the German linguistic sphere.

I suppose as artists we are always searching for metaphors that speak directly to the musics we perform to guide us and inspire. The music on this CD pushes our boundaries of what could be considered normal music making and instead moves us into sound worlds that expand what a choral ensemble can produce. This recording, which documents an almost three-year exploration into improvisation in various forms, contains works for choral ensembles that create new sound worlds in and of themselves. We are happy to present to the world a young composer from our midst, Sam Scheibe. His virtuous setting of O magnum mysterium introduces a gifted and deeply insightful compositional voice. Sanctitude is an expansive improvisation combining choir, soprano saxophone, Gregorian chant, Arabic chant, and melodies into a sound world that I hope will document the frontier of a new world of choral performance. The techniques employed in this improvisation are documented in the new text Discovering Choral Improvisation through Chant (GIA, 2020). The CD opens with a three-movement work, The Dreams That Remain by Thomas LaVoy, yet another composer from the Williamson Voices family who has adapted the sound world of this ensemble into a work of beauty and honesty. All of the works on this CD create Auroras of their own that touch us deeply and cover our senses with streamers of light. I thank my friend, James Whitbourn, for conducting on three of the tracks and for crafting the Sanctitude improvisation. Hopefully the sounds on this CD will, as Makoto Fujimara says, bring you outside of yourself, and pull you to look at the [life's] horizon and to see beyond. — James Jordan  .

Jazz Mass for four-part choir SATB with piano accompaniment by Burkhard Kinzler introduces various styles of jazz in five parts of amass. Dedicated to the band Yes, Credo focusses on rock music, whereas Kyrie touches on the blues. The final Agnus Dei works with floating musical tapestries the intensity of which rises over the course of the movement, and in the end leads to an opulent Pacem (Peace). With this work, Kinzler wants to take into account the growing need for demanding choral literature which goes beyond the common contemporary genre. His work is aimed at chamber choirs and ensembles who wish to experiment and cross boundaries on a high level. Jazz Mass is a demanding, yet unique crossover work that offers an unexpected sound experience.

Taiga Keyboard is an evolution of the award-winning Taiga synthesizer. Taiga gave users a boundary-smashing suite of unique modern Pittsburgh Modular analog synthesizer innovations. Now in Taiga Keyboard, that same powerful suite of tools acts as a foundation in this expression keyboard instrument. Exploring the larger keyboard format, spreading controls out, and adding larger knobs make sound sculpting while performing easier than ever. We've also added additional modulation sources, additional controls, a full-size 37 key premium aftertouch-enabled keybed, and a first-of-its-kind, modular expansion bay. Taiga Keyboard oscillators Waveforms generated by the three Taiga Keyboard oscillators stretch beyond the basic geometric shapes and sounds associated with analog snythesis. Taiga Keyboard waveforms pass through up to three proprietary, cascading waveshapers designed to precisely manipulate their symmetry and harmonic content. In addition, each oscillator includes a robust six-stage wave folder to add even more complexity and depth to the diverse sonic palate of Taiga Keyboard. Dedicated coarse and fine controls deliver maximum flexibility & control over the full range of each oscillator. The “Pittsburgh Filter†The Pittsburgh filter has defined the sound of Pittsburgh Modular from the moment it was introduced. A signature gummy and relaxed sound with no dead spots that has been tweaked to perfection. It offers a warm, smooth sweep through the full frequency range and a sweet resonance that does not roll off the low end. This generation of the Pittsburgh filter is specifically designed to ensure a remarkable interplay with Taiga Keyboard's oscillators. Pittsburgh Dynamics Controller Pittsburgh's new Dynamics technology imparts Taiga Keyboard with a uniquely organic depth and presence. By simultaneously managing both amplitude and harmonic content, the Pittsburgh Dynamics Controller expands beyond the one-dimensional VCA found in other synthesizers. It does this by utilizing new advancements from traditional low pass gates to add additional definition and dimension to the voice of Taiga Keyboard. When used in low pass gate mode, sounds shed harmonic content and become warmer as they decrease in volume. This mimics how sound waves react to their environment. Because of this connection, the Taiga Keyboard sounds more natural or complex compared to other instruments. Analog Echos Echos is a beautifully dark analog delay tuned to enhance the source material by repeating it over and over. Echos utilizes a pair of bucket brigade delay chips to produce a classic voltage-controllable analog delay effect that helps to place the sounds of Taiga Keyboard in a simulated environment. Open Architecture Taiga Keyboard has an internally defined signal path. Patch cables are not necessary to begin exploring. Attach a MIDI keyboard and plug the o.

According to the composer, the sonata for alto saxophone and piano, which he regards as his first mature composition, takes its title from the astronomical term referring to the spacetime boundary in a black hole beyond which light can no longer escape - a point of no return. Event Horizons is an intensely emotional piece, stemming from reflections on the immensity of the universe and one's own place in it. The title was merely a catalyst, an image that sparked the creative process. Whittall was also greatly affected by the spaciousness and subtle intricacies of Eastern music - the gamelan music of Bali in particularly. Much of the resulting music is reminiscent of the ringing of bells or gongs, which in so many cultures has great ceremonial and spiritual importance. They can be seen as a symbol of connection between the natural and meta-physical worlds. At its core, Event Horizons is an intense rite of passage, a quest for ultimate understanding, and perhaps reaches it, at least in part.
