Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) is known today primarily for his massive symphonies for orchestra. However, he also composed a number of vocal works for forces of varying size and character, including three settings of the Ave Maria. This setting was originally for alto voice and organ, and ulike the other settings, dates from Bruckner's mature years. It reflects all of the notable characteristics of his style - simple but rich textures, bold and surprising harmonic progressions and a fervently religious mood. Stunning!

After ending his studies with Sechter, Bruckner wrote his Ave Maria in 1861. On October 3, 1861 he reported in a letter: I was, in the end, splendidly aplauded by my choir—twice. In this very sound-oriented arrangement, Bruckner divides the seven-voice choir into groups with various combinations of voices and already achieves the harmonic effects of his later works. In 1856, Bruckner composed the motet Ave Maria for choir, organ and violoncello for his old place of work, St. Florian. The work is quasi basso continuo in the style of late baroque Austrian sacred music. The intricate, polyphonically relaxed movement contains a short section for solo soprano and solo alto. The centrepiece is an expressive threefold Jesus a capella invocation. Score available separately - see item CA.338700.

Bruckner's Ave Maria (WAB 7) written in 1882 for solo alto voice and organ is lush and contains a plainchant section in the middle of the A-B-A form work. Jeff Reynolds' arrangement has added an optional Contrabass part to the bottom of this splendid 4-part work for Trombone ensemble and also added tuning marks to guide performers towards perfect just ensemble tuning. This 3 minute work is appropriate for moderately advanced performers (tenor clef in part 1 and top note is a high B-flat).

This extended work sets the Martin text (Hail Mary, O Source of Life) from Hildegard von Bingen (12th cent.). Its use of much divisi creates a rich sound that reflects the ecstatic quality of the text. The shape of the long phrases is reminiscent of the motets of Bruckner. There is a lovely soprano duet at the words O dulcissima and the Gloria Patri is set in a fugal style, building to a dynamic climax and followed by a long decrescendo on the final Amen. This moving work is appropriate for Marian feasts and for concerts.
