Il fait partie d'une suite musicale pour orchestre et piano intitulée Carnaval des Animaux, grande fantaisie zoologique. Cette oeuvre est composée de quatorze mouvements écrits lors d'un voyage en Autriche en février 1886. Saint-Saëns, de son vivant, ne souhaite pas que l'oeuvre soit portée à la connaissance du public, à l'exception du Cygne. Cette pièce est illustrée par la ballerine Anna Pavlowa. Son interprétation du cygne popularise la pièce sous le nom de « la mort du cygne ». Saint-Saëns dépeint dans le Carnaval des animaux des portraits d'animaux, l'éléphant, le coucou, les kangourous et les pianistes eux-mêmes font parties de ce défilé zoologique. Ce sont des parodies musicales où l'auteur raille les compositeurs et les interprètes. Il les décrit avec un humour mordant, parfois justifié.Selon une révélation du compositeur, le Cygne est une « noble bêtise ». Cette pièce arrangée pour un seul piano présente une mélodie chantante, langoureuse et pathétique basée sur une vaporeuse harmonie. Arabesques d'une mouvante volupté traduisent les flots tranquilles où nage gracieusement un cygne qui s'éveille jusqu'à son assoupissement.

He was worried that this “grand zoological fantasy†– consisting of 14 short individual pieces for eleven instruments – might overshadow his serious works. Yet only five months after the composer's death, it appeared in print after all, beginning its worldwide victory march – in its original setting as well as in numerous arrangements. Thus, the Carnival did in fact arguably become the most popular work by this French composer and, owing to its musical originality, it is also a favourite in music lessons or for school orchestra performances. The Great Zoological Fantasy was composed in February 1886 for a carnival concert in Paris. After the first concerts, Saint-Saens prohibited all further performances and declined to have the work published during his lifetime. He was justifiably fearful that this occasional work could eclipse his more ambitious pieces. The present Urtext edition by Peter Jost is based chiefly on the autograph, which diverges in certain essential points from the standard first edition available up to now. Loriot's well-known text is printed in the Appendix to the score.
