BWV 166Cantata for the 4th Sunday after EasterThe cantata Wo gehest du hin? which dates from the first year of Bach's appointment in Leipzig and was given for the first time on 7 May 1724 takes as its starting point a phrase from the gospel for the fourth Sunday after Easter (St. John xvi 5-15). Bach's setting of this text is simple and concise. The scoring is light - apart from Strings and continuo it calls only for an Oboist and three Vocal soloists and a Chorus in the closing chorale. Coffee Cantata-Cantata No.211: Schweigt stille plaudert nicht (Be quiet chatter not) BWV 211.The Coffee Cantata (BA 10211) and the Peasant Cantata (BA 10212) both on librettos by Picander are among the best-known and most frequently performed of Bach’s secular cantatas.Written in or around 1733 the Coffee Cantata deals humorously with the importance of the newly fashionable beverage. This is demonstrated in the soprano aria “Ah how sweet the coffee tastes lovelier than a thousand kisses milder than Muscatel”.Both cantatas reveal Bach’s mastery in their unusual subject-matter formal design andmusical workmanship. Cantata for the 4th Sunday of Advent-The cantata Bereitet die Wege is one of the few works by Johann Sebastian Bach of which we know fairly well how it came into being. The autograph full score bears the date 1715; Bach therefore composed the piece for the church service given by the Weimar court orchestra (of which he was the concert master) on 22 December the fourth Sunday in Advent in the year 1715. We even know the author of the words: it was the High Ecclesiastical Secretary in Weimar Salomon Franck who wrote the poem especially for that occasion and had it printed in his annual cycle of cantata texts entitled Evangelisches Andachtsopfer.

Jesu bleibet meine Freude from Cantata 147-Bach’s appointment as the Cantor at Leipzig’s Thomaskirche in 1723 required him to produce a new cantata for every Sunday service. Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring is taken from his Cantata No.147 and is unusually elaborate treated more like an aria than a chorale. It is perhaps the best-loved cantata movement from Bach’s entire output and is a certain crowd pleaser for your concert programme.
