Per Nørgård's Maya Dances (-for her unborn son) for mixed chorus SATB (1979/1992) - English version.
Original Danish text by Ole Sarvig - from the opera Siddharta. English vocal version by Paula Hostrup-Jesse.The two melodies of MAYA DANCES was originally composed for children’s chorus and mixed choir with orchestra, respectively, as part of the opera SIDDHARTA (1974-79). The children’s song (bars 1-27) was later incorporated into the first movement of the choral work WIE EIN KIND for mixed chorus from 1979-80 (printed edition WH 29552). The presentchoral version for SATB from 1992, edited by Ivan Hansen and the composer, is a combination of the two above mentioned songs from the opera. In the opera the children’s singing game describes the sad Queen Maya’s longing for a child. She senses the coming of a new age and is enlivened by dancing a fertility dance for the unborn prince Siddharta. Two themes alternate: the straightforward song of the children, and the comment of Prajapati (Maya’s sister) on Queen Maya’s dance.

With his three songs for mixed a-cappella choir (SSAATB) which were published under the speaking title of 'Fairy Land' in 2013, Hermann Grosse-Schware takes us to the wonderful land of fairy tales. All three six-part works are based on English-language poems by William Shakespeare. The first piece 'Over hill, over dale' from 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' is characterized by melodic sequences and a distinctive rhythm which portrays the content of the piece headed 'Swift and Easy' as does the swaying 3/4 rhythm of No. 2 'Philomel, with melody'. In the lively 'Come unto these yellow sands' (No. 3) one seems to be experiencing the barking of the dog and the crowing of the cock at first hand.

The enormous range of publications for mixed choir is published in the Choir Library in separate volumes for secular and sacred repertoire. The secular repertoire is divided into two volumes of unaccompanied choral music and one volume of works with instrumental accompaniment, mostly piano. The focus of the publishing house's program is on the Romantic era here. The majority of works was therefore composed by the great choral composers of this period: Johannes Brahms, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Robert Schumann. Later composers include Max Reger, Johann Nepomuk David and Kurt Thomas, but also Einojuhani Rautavaara and Siegfried Thiele. As female composers, Fanny Hensel and Clara Schumann are represented. We wish you lots of joy at discovering and singing!Volume 1 A cappellaI. Love SongsII. Seasonal SongsIII. Nature SongsIV. The Sephardic culture originates from the Jewish population of Spain that was banished at the end of the 15th century and afterwards spread to the whole of the Mediterranean area, the Balkan and North Africa. Its unique Spanish dialect Ladino was preserved, finding musical expression in ballads, lyrical and paraliturgical songs for the most part. The choir conductor and composer Ohad Stolarz took eight of these Sephardic Folk Songs and arranged them as a cappella settings for four-part mixed choir. These arrangements may be performed both as a cycle and individually, being also suitable for non-professional choirs due to their lack of difficulty. The musically and harmonically colorful, partly also exotic pieces therefore present an enrichment for the program of every interculturally interested choir. The informative preface and the translations of the lyrics into German and English enable the content-related engagement with Sephardic culture, too. Further choral literature on this topic can be found in the volumes Sepharad and Aschkenaz by Alon Wallach.Audio samples: RIAS Kammerchor, dir. Justin Doyle, recording by Deutschlandfunk KulturThe melodies are often quirky, the vocal ranges are unchallenging and there is plenty of material at the back of the volume to help with translation and pronunciation. A group of these a cappella pieces in a concert would be a most attractive proposition.(Jeremy Jackman, Choir and Organ)Sephardic Folk Songs, also suitable for non-professional choirs.

This Heinio work commissioned by the Key Ensemble looks at the Virgin Mary from fascinatingly different perspectives. The first two of the five songs are about the Black Madonna. The third alludes to Luther and has the hymn Vom Himmel hoch embedded in it. The fourth is based on a 13th century Stabat mater hymn, and the last draws on Orthodox motifs. Duration ca 15 minutes. Voicing: SSSAAATTTBBB a cappella.

Forgotten Peoples was written over a period of twenty years, from 1970 to 1989, without being planned as a series beforehand. It contains six parts in all, each an independent work in several movements. In it the Estonian composer Veljo Tormis has incorporated elements of the vanishing folk tradition of the Finno-Ugrian peoples, melodies and texts more or less sunk into oblivion. My creative interest earlier involved me in searching to identify the musical vernacular of my own people, the Estonians. Now a new, logically related theme was found for my creative mission: the fate of small nations, as Tormis puts it. The performing group chosen was the mixed chorus, a cappella. According to Tormis, a purely vocal treatment best retains the original form of folk songs - a principle that underlines all his folkloristic works. Karjala saatus (Karelian Destiny) dating from 1989 is a cycle of Karelian runic songs (in Karelian).
