3-5 Octaves of Handbells Level 3-Here is a hauntingly beautiful setting of the Huron Carol. The use of mixed meter and a malleted sixteenth note bass palate create a setting that is uniquely challenging to both ringer and director.

Huron Carol ('Twas the Moon of Wintertime) is perhaps the oldest Canadian song. It was written ca. 1642 by Jean de Brébeuf, a Jesuitmissionary at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons. The original words were in Huron language, but Whittall uses the English translation from 1926. The song's melody is based on a traditional French folk song “Une Jeune Pucelleâ€. Whittall's arrangement is done for Audite choir in 2013. It is a skillful arrangement, bringing out the best qualities of the original melody. Huron Carol ('Twas the Moon of Wintertime) on mahdollisesti vanhin kanadalainen laulu.

Twas in the Moon of Wintertime is a traditional Canadian carol which was originally written in the Huron Indian language by a Jesuit missionary. Robert W. Smith captures the mystique of the native Indian culture, and voices the percussion to be as 'ethnically' accurate as possible. This is pure Robert W. Smith scoring. Haunting!

Huron Carol Optional hand drum and sleigh bells accompany this fully-scored arrangement of the Huron Carol. Tall chords in open spacing keep all ringers busy. Equally playable by 3, 4 or 5 octaves with performance notes for each octave. If you don't have the percussion, you still get the effect through the use of mallets on tabled bells. A two to three octave arrangement of this title is available in Rhythm and Bells, #1772.
