Par MANTOVANI BRUNO. Commandés pour la Folle journée 2008 de Nantes consacrée à Franz Schubert, ces Huit moments musicaux sont le deuxième hommage que je rends à mon illustre collègue. Si dans Mit ausdruck pour clarinette basse et orchestre (créé le 8 octobre 2003 par Alain Billard et l'orchestre symphonique de Bamberg dirigé par Jonathan Nott), j'empruntais des idées musicales issues de lieder de Schubert pour les intégrer à mon langage et les transformer par des techniques de développement actuelles, la référence est ici moins concrète, plus métaphorique. Hormis le fait que j'ai utilisé les notes fa-la-mib-do-si, issues du nom du compositeur viennois (FA-SCH), c'est plutôt une stylisation d'une certaine conduite du discours schubertien que j'ai essayée de créer ici. Les formes courtes juxtaposées évoquent les cycles pour piano ou pour voix. Par ailleurs, le sentiment d'attente dans certaines parties, reposant sur des bourdons aux cordes au caractère quasi-oriental, renvoie aussi à Schubert. Les huit sections, très contrastées, font aussi la part belle au rythme (que les instruments soient en relais ou en homorythmie), et alternent des configurations sonores très différentes, dans la mesure où la hiérarchie soliste-accompagnateur varie sans cesse d'une partie à l'autre. Par PESSON GERARD. Ce trio est constitué de plusieurs moments musicaux inspirés des carnets d'esquisses de Marcel Proust. Proust est, entre Anne-Lise Gastaldi (pianiste et fondatrice du trio George Sand) et moi, comme un lien réflexe. Cette partition, qui lui est dédiée, est un hommage à la musique de Vinteuil (le compositeur en partie fictif de La Recherche du temps perdu), mais aussi une méditation sur les arcanes de l'invention proustienne. La phrase utilisée comme titre de ce trio est une sorte de mémento griffonné par Proust sur le folio 45 (verso) du Carnet 4 (1914-17) - phrase qui est liée au détail d'un tableau de Bruegel ainsi qu'au rougeoyant Septuor, la dernière oeuvre de Vinteuil. The compositions in A Gift of Moments are typical of deLise?s composing style that often features the juxtaposition of disparate musical elements like serial technique, frequently changing meters, the urgency and drive of rock and roll, and the lush harmonies of 1960?s West Coast Jazz. Dr. deLise was Adjunct Lecturer of Theory and Composition at the Boyer College of Music and Dance (in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). He is the author of The Professional Songwriter, a textbook on songwriting. The title, A Gift of Moments, comes from something a friend wrote about her deceased husband. She described their too-short time together as, ?a gift of moments.? (Time with someone you love is always ?too short,? isn?t it?) Since February 2020, (since I?ve been locked down at home with my patient and loving wife, Theresa), like the rest of us, I?ve been reminded each day of just how delicate life is. My friend?s comment about her lost love has gradually revealed itself as a worthy title for the collection of music I was creating during this time of lockdown. All of the pieces in this collection are in some way about love: of a mate, of family, our way of life, and those beliefs we consider particular to us. The compositions are varied in style as they encompass musical gestures reflective of the many disparate musical traditions alive in my soul. With this unapologetically sensitive, perhaps even nostalgic, music of mine I intend to blur the arbitrary boundaries of genre classification, like classical or pop; ambient or orchestral.
