Sonata no.1 in c minor op. 32-At the beginning of the 1870s Camille?Saint-Saëns showed a particular fondness for the Violoncello. He completed his first Cello Sonata in December 1872 immediately after finishing his first Cello Concerto.The sonata is strongly reminiscent of Beethoven not only due to the key of c minor but also predominantly on account of its gripping dramatic art. The exceptional position of this demanding in parts highly virtuosicsonata was quickly recognised by the public and critics and so the work soon found its way into concert repertoire.?Henle's Urtext edition takes all surviving sources into account for the first time ever. PascalRogé and David Geringas kindly provided the markings for the Piano and Cello parts.

The first three movements of Johannes Brahms? E Minor Cello Sonata were composed in 1862 the last movement was written in 1865. During the first years of its performance the work was received with mixed enthusiasm. By the end of Brahms? life however it was widely performed and by the first decades of the 20th century it was firmly embedded in the repertoire of many distinguished cellists. It was notably Robert Hausmann?s advocacy of the work which seems to have contributed greatly to its promotion.Of particular value to the editors were the three early performance editions of the Cello Sonata Op.38 by Cornelius van Vliet andEdwin Hughes Hugo Becker and Carl Friedberg as well as Julius Klengel. The cellists? van Vliet Becker and Klengel?s fingering and bowing allows for a better understanding of their performance practice. As such the Bärenreiter edition comes with a Cello part marked with fingering and bowing by the editors which are based on the practices of Brahms? contemporaries. We also provide an unmarked urtext part.An important part of this edition is the extensive preface. Firstly it informs about the works? origins early performances its publication as well as early reception. Truly remarkable is the unique Performance Practice Commentary. Here the editors take the premise that already a few decades after Brahms? death a widening gulf developed between the composer?s expectations and the performance practices of the early 20th century. In a very concrete and practical way the editors summarize some of the key issues in understanding Brahms? notation with regard to rhythm and timing dynamics and accentuation dots and strokes slurring and non legato Piano pedalling and overholding piano arpeggiation and dislocation string instrument fingering string instrument harmonics and vibrato. Two volumes entitled Cello Meets Piano edited and published by Árpád Pejtsik were issued many years ago by the Könemann Music Budapest. The first edition was quickly sold out and no further editions followed. EMB has undertaken to issue a new edition entitled Cello & Piano with the content unchanged. The two volumes contain a selection from 200 years of music. Eight Baroque sonatas are included apart from the famous D minor one by Corelli there are some that are appearing in a modern edition for the first time in 300 years. In addition to cyclical works (Haydn: Sonatina Mozart: Divertimento Vivaldi: Concerto)and sets of variations (Beethoven Tartini) there are many shorter pieces as well not only the famous minuets by Boccherini Mozart and Beethoven but also works published for the first time here. The E minor Cello Sonata is the first work for one solo instrument and Piano which the meticulous composer also had printed. In summer 1865 Brahms offered it to the publisher Simrock as a sonata “whose twoinstruments are both absolutely easy to play” – and rightly so: contrary to the later F-major Sonata op. 99 (HN 1135) this early sonata is technically less demanding yet musically more striking at the same time sothat it is a hit with amateurs and professionals alike. This Henle edition is based on the new Brahms Complete Edition and thus boasts besides in-depth comments a musical text revised according to the latest scholarlyfindings; as always the Cello part is enhanced with additional markings.

Bernhard Romberg (1767-1841) probably was the greatest cello virtuoso of his time and compared to Paganini in his lifetime. He gave cello lessons at the famous Conservatoire de Paris among others.Romberg's popular Trio in E minor originally was the first part of the Trois Trios d'une Difficulté Progressive pour le Violoncelle Viola et Violoncelle Op. 38. The solo violoncello was accompanied by a viola and a second violoncello. The two other trios are much more difficult, with a lot of passage work, thumb position, tenor and violin clef.The Trio in E minor Op. 38/1 was arranged many times and scored for various combinations of instruments. This edition refers to the popular arrangement for violoncello and piano by Friedrich Gustav Jansen (1837-1910) which is ideal for music lessons and concerts.Also available is another arrangement of the Trio Op. 38/1 for three violoncellos (SE 1008).
