for Solo Cello-Aphrodite's Rock - a mighty sea stack outside Paphos Cyprus - is the birthplace of the Goddess of Love. A local myth tells that the person who swims around it will be blessed with eternal beauty. If that fails this music offers an alternative: the sea is present in the middle section while the legend itself is mused over from the very first note.Petra tou Romiou (Rock of the Greek) also known as Aphrodite's Rock the birthplace of the Goddess of Love - is situated on the seaside near Palaepaphos. capital of the island during Greco-Roman times. Palaepaphos (Old Paphos) was visited by Paul the Apostle during the 1st century AD and is now on the UNESCO list ofcultural and natural treasures of the world's heritage. Aphrodite's Rock was written in Nicosia Cyprus in late June 2013. From having come upon so much beauty during my visit such as the jaw-dropping mosaics of Paphos accompanied by the transitional ever-changing sea music was the natural result.The first and third part of my piece reflects upon the seducing legend of the birthplace while the middle section is an attempt to picture the surrounding sea. From Cyprus I was flown back to England for the wedding of Sian and Steve Newman on June 29 2013. This piece is their wedding gift.

Par VIVALDI ANTONIO. Throughout his life, Antonio Vivaldi wrote almost thirty instrumental works that use the cello as a solo instrument. Vivaldi knew how to tailor his music to the cello and in doing so, helped to establish this still young instrument in the music of that time. The Concerto RV 531 is the only double concerto in Vivaldi?s ?uvre for two solo violoncellos. The two solo parts take centre stage with virtuosic passages but lie on the instrument so well that they can be comfortably mastered by advanced students. The edition is based on the careful evaluation of Vivaldi?s autograph score which is the main source and several inconsistencies found in previous editions have been clarified. At the same time the edition allows for a flexible realisation of this concerto: it can be performed by a full tutti orchestra or by one performer per part. He has had close working relationships with Charles Wuorinen Lukas Foss Oliver Knussen Elliott Carter Milton Babbitt Toru Takemitsu Chick Corea Pierre Boulez Mario Davidovsky and others whose works he has premiered and recorded. The E minor Cello Sonata is the first work for one solo instrument and Piano which the meticulous composer also had printed. In summer 1865 Brahms offered it to the publisher Simrock as a sonata “whose twoinstruments are both absolutely easy to play” – and rightly so: contrary to the later F-major Sonata op. 99 (HN 1135) this early sonata is technically less demanding yet musically more striking at the same time sothat it is a hit with amateurs and professionals alike. This Henle edition is based on the new Brahms Complete Edition and thus boasts besides in-depth comments a musical text revised according to the latest scholarlyfindings; as always the Cello part is enhanced with additional markings.

Written for Moray Welsh whilst still an undergraduate at York University. This piece was completed in mid-September. Inspired by Hermann Hesse's Steppenwolf. A solo 'cello seemed an appropriate medium for music which might explore the character of Harry Haller with his desire for bourgeois comfort and his strong misanthropic and suicidal tendencies. The opening theme attempts to express this - melancholy nostalgic a bit Biedermeyer (cf. Brahms Intermezzi). The basic theme of the book at its simplest is that every human personality consists of hundred of different personalities - within every man there lurks a wolf. Accordingly the tendency of my piece is for allits musical material to become distorted either by thematic transformation or by changes of timbre. There are three movements played without a break. The first is a character portrait of the Steppenwolf. The second is concerned in the most general sort of way with the dance elements in the novel - Harry's being taught to dance and appreciate low 'popular' music - a tango is recapitulated in a waltz and 'Yearning' a popular song of the time (1927) is hinted at. The third movement concerns the Masked Ball and the Magic Theatre. Mozart is one of Hesse's great loves and he is repeatedly mentioned in the book. Inevitably some Mozart quotes have been worked in the most significant being a reference to The Magic Flute 'fire and water' flute theme in the middle of the second movement. Long before I finished the piece I was disenchanted with the work of Hesse. Much of Steppenwolf I now find rather embarrassing and the claims currently made for Hesse's greatness seem to me exaggerated. Since my piece is in no important sense programmatically specific this change of heart doesn't really matter.© David Blake
