Personal Note My high school band director, Clarence F. Wroblewski, died on November 24, 2018. In the 1950s, he was a pioneer in the field of public school instrumental music in Baltimore City. He was my mentor and my dear friend. It was his guidance and encouragement that set my young life's course on the path of music. Performance Notes Ceremony of Peace contains only the notes of the ascending pentatonic scale: Bb, C, Eb, F, and G. The middle voice written for Oboe, Tenor Sax and Horn uses the note D at cadences. The character of the music should give the impression of ceremonial music performed on primitive instruments. The Tom-Tom parts are exactly the same as the Snare Drum and Bass Drum parts. The director may decide whether to use one or the other or both. If Snare Drum with snares off is used, try it with mallets instead of drum sticks. If a Bass Drum is used be certain that it does not overpower the band. The director may choose to turn it on its side and muffle it with a towel. In the Percussion 2 part Sleigh Bells may double with the Tambourine to add a primitive, ceremonial sound. The Clarinet part may be doubled an octave higher in bands where this is possible.Personal NoteMy high school band director, Clarence F. Wroblewski, died on November 24, 2018. The Kolomoki Mounds is one of the largest and earliest Woodland Period earthwork mound complexes in the Southeastern United States and the largest in Georgia. These mounds were constructed between 350-600 A.D. The eight mounds include a Great Temple Mound, a ceremonial mound, several burial mounds and a large plaza in the center where some 1,500 residents lived in a large village of thatched houses. Kolomoki celebrates the Swift Creek and Weeden Island Indian cultures. Using the first six notes for young band, the piece begins with a rhythmic statement from the brass and percussion. A simple melody is introduced by the woodwinds and later found in the trumpet part. The middle section features smaller sections. The piece ends with restatement of the main theme with a woodwind counter melody. This piece is designed to make your beginners sound great. The “Kolomoki Mounds†is one of the largest and earliest Woodland Period earthwork mound complexes in the Southeastern United States and the largest in Georgia. The Right of Your Senses is a set of nine songs for children's voices, solo soprano, and orchestra written for the National Children's Chorus, American Youth Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. The texts are primarily 17th-century, by Thomas Traherne and George Herbert, but two of them come from the 11th-century Enchiridion by Byrhtferth. The overarching theme is the story of creation, but not just the list of objects created: the texts deal with the emotional resonances of the sun, the sea, the air, and the moon with all their mysterious, bright, and dark potential. There is a recurring gesture in the strings, introduced at the very top: a simple descending pattern which binds many of the movements together, even when hidden in the more tumultuous sections. The first two movements are bright, whereas the middle three movements are violent and deal with the angrier natural elements. The seventh movement is the most abstract and playful, and here a direct nod to Benjamin Britten's A Ceremony of Carols, with a fast three-part canon depicting the behavior of the atom. The eighth movement, Night, is the slowest, and depicts the night sky. The final movement is calm, and encourages us: Be faithful in a little, and you shall be master over much. The piece ends with five strokes of high bells. x Nico Muhly.

According to the composer, the sonata for alto saxophone and piano, which he regards as his first mature composition, takes its title from the astronomical term referring to the spacetime boundary in a black hole beyond which light can no longer escape - a point of no return. Event Horizons is an intensely emotional piece, stemming from reflections on the immensity of the universe and one's own place in it. The title was merely a catalyst, an image that sparked the creative process. Whittall was also greatly affected by the spaciousness and subtle intricacies of Eastern music - the gamelan music of Bali in particularly. Much of the resulting music is reminiscent of the ringing of bells or gongs, which in so many cultures has great ceremonial and spiritual importance. They can be seen as a symbol of connection between the natural and meta-physical worlds. At its core, Event Horizons is an intense rite of passage, a quest for ultimate understanding, and perhaps reaches it, at least in part.
