Les titres de ce recueil sont issus du grand repertoire des Standards de Jazz. Chaque titre est presente sous deux formes. La premiere version est un arrangement pour piano entierment doigte et chiffre de l'oeuvre. La seconde version represente le theme simple accompagne de son chiffrage harmonique d'origine, en quelque sorte la matiere premiere a partir de laquelle toute forme d'arrangement peut etre elabore. An vu de ces deux versions, les pianistes pourront analyser les ameliorations melodiques et harmoniques apportees a l'arrangement pour piano et s'exercer a l'improvisation sur ces themes. Les professeurs trouveront aussi dans ce volume un bon repertoire de base pour initier leurs eleves a l'etude du jazz. Afin d'apporter un cote ludique a ce recueil, les midi-files contenus dans leCD mixte (CD audio and CD rom) offrent la possibilite d'ecouter les titres en MIDI au moyen de la carte son d'un ordinateur. De plus, avec un material approprie (sequenceur, editeur de partitions et autres), il est possible de changer les sons et les tempi, de jouer facilement des passages en boucles ainsi que toute autre possibilite offerte par les differents logiciels actuels. Each title is presented in two ways. The first version of the work arrangement for piano with all fingering and figuring included. The second version present the elementary theme along with the origianl harmonic figuring which is the 'raw material' used for composing all arrangements. By using these two versions, pianists will be able to analyze the melodic and harmonic improvements added to the piano arrangement, as well as practice their own improvisations on the themes. Piano teachers will also find in this volume a good basic repertory to introduce Jazz to their students. The playful aspect is added to this anthology by way of the midi-files which accompany the mixed CD (CD audio and CD rom) offering the possibility to listen to the pieces in midi by using the sound card of a computer. In addition, it is possible to change the sounds and teh tempo with appropriate equipement.

This “Grand Overture†was commissioned by the “Nagano Community Band†- Japan- on occasion of its jubilee in 1992 and is dedicated to the band’s conductor, Ikuo Inagaki.The work is based upon three main themes, each symbolising a certain theme. The first part is characterized by its bright themes played mainly by the brass, accompanied by the woodwinds and festive percussion. This part symbolizes the jubilee which is the origin of the composition. This is followed by a bouncing allegro, in which each register of the band displays brilliant techniques. Especially the woodwinds come to the fore! This movement depicts the industriousness and enthousiasm shown by the members of the“Nagano Community Band†in the carrying out of their hobby. A third, main theme, is choral-like in character and is displayed both in the (soft) brass as well as in the warm medium register of the reeds. Here, nature’s beaty in and around the city of Nagano is musically celebrated. Following a “chamber-music episode†(featuring the flute, oboe, clarinet, alto-saxophone and horn) the initial allegro re-occurs, weaving its way towards a grandiose finale, in which the two previous themes are once again apparent. Due to its very colourful scoring and the enormous diversity of musical thoughts and ideas, this composition is a fascinating and memorable piece, worthy a jubilee overture! Nagano vivait et vibrait au rythme des exploits sportifs. Avec un chiffre record de 2304 athlètes venant de 72 nations, le dernier rendez-vous planétaire olympique du XXe siècle fut un succès. Pour célébrer cet événement l’Orchestre d’Harmonie de la ville de Nagano passe commande Jan Van der Roost. Le résultat est prestigieux. Ce sera Olympica : une œuvre fascinante aux multiples couleurs.

Festival Prelude ‘Ad Excel’ was commissioned by the AD Concert Band, from Solihull in the UK, to celebrate their 40th Anniversary in 2016. The title, Ad Excel, is a play on words: it is Latin for ‘to excel’ but also celebrates the band’s anniversary as XL is 40 in Roman numerals. The work opens with a bright fanfare with frequent changes of meter. This leads to a playful main subject, played first by woodwinds, followed by full band. A bridge passage leads to a legato second subject, played twice. The bridge passage returns to introduce the both main melodies in new keys and instrumentations before a coda, derived from the opening fanfare, brings the work to a close.Festival Prelude ‘Ad Excel’ werd geschreven in opdracht van de AD Concert Band uit het Britse Solihull, ter gelegenheid van het veertigjarig bestaan van dit orkest in 2016. De titel, Ad Excel, heeft een dubbele betekenis, die is gebaseerd op de Engelse van het Latijn afgeleide term ‘to excel’ (excelleren, uitblinken) én op het veertigjarig jubileum van de band, aangezien XL in Romeinse cijfers het getal 40 aanduidt. Het werk opent met een opgewekte fanfare waarin frequent van maatsoort wordt gewisseld. Dan volgt een speels hoofdthema, eerst in het hout en dan het volledige orkest. Een bridgegedeelte leidt naar een legato tweede thema, dat twee keer klinkt.Daarop keert de bridge terug om beide hoofdmelodieën in nieuwe toonsoorten en instrumentaties te introduceren, waarna een coda, ontleend aan de openingsfanfare, het werk besluit. Das Stück Festival Prelude ‘Ad Excel’ wurde 2016 von der AD Concert Band aus Solihull (Vereinigtes Königreich) aus Anlass ihres 40-jährigen Jubiläums in Auftrag gegeben. Der Titel, Ad Excel, ist ein Wortspiel: Es ist das lateinische Wort für to excel“ (engl.: hervorragend sein“), bezieht sich aber auch auf das Jubiläum des Orchesters, da XL die römische Ziffer für 40 ist. Das Werk beginnt mit einer strahlenden Fanfare mit zahlreichen Taktwechseln. Sie führt zu einem verspielten Hauptthema, das zunächst von den Holzbläsern und anschließend vom gesamten Orchester gespielt wird. Eine Überleitung führt zu einem zweiten Thema im Legato. Die Überleitung kehrtschließlich wieder, um die beiden Hauptmelodien in neuen Tonarten und Instrumentierungen vorzustellen, bis das Werk in einer Coda, die von der Eröffnungsfanfare abgeleitet ist, endet.
