Per Nørgård's Maya Dances (-for her unborn son) for mixed chorus SATB (1979/1992) - English version.
Original Danish text by Ole Sarvig - from the opera Siddharta. English vocal version by Paula Hostrup-Jesse.The two melodies of MAYA DANCES was originally composed for children’s chorus and mixed choir with orchestra, respectively, as part of the opera SIDDHARTA (1974-79). The children’s song (bars 1-27) was later incorporated into the first movement of the choral work WIE EIN KIND for mixed chorus from 1979-80 (printed edition WH 29552). The presentchoral version for SATB from 1992, edited by Ivan Hansen and the composer, is a combination of the two above mentioned songs from the opera. In the opera the children’s singing game describes the sad Queen Maya’s longing for a child. She senses the coming of a new age and is enlivened by dancing a fertility dance for the unborn prince Siddharta. Two themes alternate: the straightforward song of the children, and the comment of Prajapati (Maya’s sister) on Queen Maya’s dance.

This series of easy piano pieces for teaching purposes presents pupils in the early and early-middle stages with a careful selection from well-known and less-known compositions by important masters. The individual volumes are deliberately kept small in compass, since it is more stimulating for children if the literature used for instruction is changed frequently. Between 1795 and 1802, Beethoven composed a large number of German dances, contredances and minuets. He made simple piano reductions of a considerable proportion of these occasional compositions. The selection of the present pieces was made on the basis of the compositions that seemed most suitable for the piano. The piano arrangements are based on the scores and the original piano reductions, and the marks of interpretation have been retained. The working-out of more finely-differentiated interpretations is left to the performer studying the pieces. These grateful little pieces are equally suitable as studies and as recital pieces. Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Fall 1974.

The material of this volume consists of the dances most popular in Vienna at he beginning of the 19th century: landler, ecossaises and German dances. They were originally piano pieces, but were certainly performed on all sorts of instruments at social gatherings and in public places of entertainment. This transcription for children's orchestra of these miniature compositions is a modern continuation of the old tradition of their 'transcription'.

In his Slavonic Dances Op. 46, Dvorak did not draw on pre-existent music, but created something original and new, projecting his own compositional will into the creative process. What we hear are Dvoraks melodies, and that it is due to his creative will that he cast them as in Dance 3, for example in the form of a melodic four-tone model which is common to many folk songs and childrens songs. Finally, it is his rhythmic invention and shaping of the musical character of each dance that breathe life into the elements of Slavonic dance music. The Slavonic Dances Op. 46, which began to conquer the world's concert halls in 1878, made a major contribution to Dvorak's international breakthrough. The Urtext edition is based on the main sources, mainly on the autograph score and the first edition.

This series of easy piano music for teaching purposes presents pupils in the lower and lower middle grades with a carefully chosen selection of well-known and lesserknown compositions by important masters. The volumes are deliberately kept small in extent, since it is more stimulating for children to change the teaching material frequently. In his last years, Mozart composed a large number of German Dances for orchestra. This music for daily use of the time - intended functionally, for dancing and entertainment - is distinguished by enchanting ideas and simple textures. The editor has tried to cany over the instrumental subtleties into the piano-duet writing. These dances are particularly suitable for introducing some relaxation into the learning of the piano, for the interpretative and technical workingout demanded by Mozart's original piano-duet works is not required to the same degree here. The marks of expression have been taken over from the original score and in part supplemented. Notes not marked otherwise are to be played non legato. The technical difficulty of these pieces corresponds roughly to the third and fourth year of study. Heinz Walter, Salzburg, Spring 1977.

Roughly half of this selection of transcriptions of Baroque vocal and instrumental works consists of well-known pieces by the greatest composers of the period (Purcell: Dido and Aeneas, Rameau: Piéces de clavecin, Händel: Water Music, Music for the Royal Fireworks, J.S. Bach: B major partita, C major orchestral suite), but works by composers less well known nowadays (for example, G. Böhm and J. C. F. Fischer) are also included, together with unusual items such as Polish, German and Hungarian dances from 17th- and18th-century Hungarian manuscripts: the Kájoni and Vietórisz codexes, and Eleonóra Lányi's music book. This volume, previously available in the Leggiero series, is now, in a new guise, part of the series Treasury for String Ensembles. Treasury for String Ensembles provides carefully selected original compositions and arrangements from the Renaissance to the twentieth century, compiled in volumes according to level of difficulty, from beginner's level to professional. Elementary (all in first position): typically for three violins and cello or children's string orchestra. Intermediate: typically for three violins and cello or string quartet or youth string orchestra. Advanced: typically for string quartet or string quintet (with double bass) or string orchestra. The volumes are published in both printed and digital form. The printed edition contains the score and one copy of each part. Further copies can be ordered for the purposes of orchestral performance. The digital edition can be viewed on screen, and the parts can also be downloaded as A4-sized PDF files. The digital edition comes free with the printed edition, using the unique code provided.
