Dedicated to the luminary Steve Cowan, …empty mind, open heart… is a four-movement suite that centers around the intervals of a fifth and a tritone. Each movement is inspired by a quote from the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu. The opening movement is a meditation. The aleatoric rhythms and pacing of the notes are guided by the breathing of the performer, according to specific instructions in the score. Out of that atmosphere emerges a fluid, serene series of arpeggios in irregular rhythms in the second movement. Each new chord changes only one or two notes at a time in a gradual evolution over time. The third movement is a study in rhythm, sometimes dizzying. And the piece ends with a heartfelt, mostly quiet soliloquy.Dédiée à la sommité Steve Cowan, … esprit vide, cœur ouvert… est une suite en quatre mouvements centrée sur les intervalles d'une quinte et d'un triton. Chaque mouvement est inspiré d'une citation du Tao Te Ching de Lao Tseu. Le mouvement d’ouverture est une méditation. Les rythmes aléatoires et le rythme des notes sont guidés par la respiration de l'interprète, selon des instructions spécifiques de la partition. Per Norgard FOR A CHANGEThe title 'For a Change' refers to the Chinese 'Book of Changes' ('I Ching'), which has been consulted in situations of choice for millenia. In the I Ching, 64 states of being determine the full cycle of the phases of life. From these I selected four, the sequence of which progresses from a situation from which there is apparently no solution, to a (temporary) relief.In the first movement 'Thunder repeated, the Image of Shock', a vicious circle of claustrophobic, closed circuits is represented by the tom-tom part. This is followed by tam-tams and wood sounds, but returns full-circle to the tom-toms.The second movement 'The taming Power of the small' has its origins in the violence of the first movement, but this time lets it resolve in a long glide upwards which stars with voice sounds 'borrowed' from the Beatles' 'Revolution no 9' which are then transmitted to the other instruments.The third movement is 'The Gentle, The Penetrating' in which lyrical poetry dominates with gentle bell-like sounds and delicate tunes. Finally the sovereign, many-layered world of rhythm triumphs in the fourth movement: 'Towards Completion. Fire over Water', the main movement of the work.'For a Change' was premiered on 27.2. 1983 with the Sealand Symphony Orchestra conducted by Tamas Veto. Soloist was Gert Mortensen whom the work is dedicated.

Work for Solo Percussion dating from 1983. Ruders writes: The extraordinary title is a typical example of Poul Ruder's (b. 1949) peculiar and bizarre sense of humour - Ruders, together with Hans Abrahamsen and Bo Holten, being one of the most important names within new Danish music after the Nørgård-Holmgreen-Nørholm generation. Although Ruders is influenced by Holmgreen's absurd simplicity, he takes up an original place in new Danish music to which he has conveyed humour and liveliness as well as theatre and virtuosity. Quotations, 'found objects', play an important part in Ruders' music, for instance in his chamber work MEDIEVAL VARIATIONS (1974), but the old material is being varied with adequate audacity and liveliness so as to yield new qualities, not unlike Peter Maxwell Davies' 'music on music'. ALARM is 'a short shocker, a kind of film soundtrack without the pictures', based on the horror in victor Hugo's THE BELL RINGER OF NOTRE DAME. To produce the right atmosphere of uneasiness and nervousness Ruders uses, among other things, the Balinese cymbal-machine 'ching-ching' and the snore of the 'didjeridoo' from Australia.

Born in Bury in 1937, Gordon Crosse is one of the most distinguished composers of his generation. He studied at Oxford University under Egon Wellesz and, during a long academic career, was Composer-in-Residence at King's College Cambridge from 1973-75. His best known works include the oboe concertante Ariadne, the Three Choirs Festival Oratorio Changes, the opera Purgatory, the children's entertainment Meet my Folks, to words by Ted Hughes, the orchestral Dreamsongs (a homage to the music of Benjamin Britten) and Memories of Morning: Night (a monodrama for mezzo-soprano and orchestra).Three Twitchings was first performed by John Turner (recorder) and Nathan Williamson (piano) in the Library at The Red House, Aldeburgh, on October 4th 2018. Two scores are provided, rather than a separate recorder part, so that the recorder player can see and respond to the pianist's part as they play.
