These arrangements for Choir and Organ meet the frequently made request to be able to perform well-known movements from Bach cantatas without the expense of a larger ensemble/orchestra. The cantata movements can be performed in accordance with the church year but are also suitable for performance in festive services and concerts.

Orchestral Version-John McCabe's Psalm-Cantata (Orchestral Version). Vocal score for Soprano Baritone and SATB choir.This work was commissioned by the English Baroque Choir and their music director Jeremy Jackman who gave the first performance on 16th March 2013 at St. John’s SmithSquare London.'I’ve wanted to write a choral/instrumental piece based on texts from the Psalms for a very long time so this commission from the English Baroque Choir and their music director Jeremy Jackman (to whom the work is dedicated) was a wonderful opportunity to put this idea into practice. I decided to write a kind of latter-day equivalent to the Bachcantatas with two soloists (soprano and baritone). The texts are derived from a variety of Psalm sources: some in Latin some in English a meditation by Savonarola and a Henry Vaughan poem.' - John McCabe

uit: Vier Volkskantates-Romance from the DandelionsCantata on verse by Miloslav Bures A cantata for mixed a cappella choir and soprano solo set to a text by Miloslav Bures. The work is part of a cycle of four vocal pieces which Martinu wrote to texts by this poet (The Opening of the Wells Romance of the Dandelions Legend of the Smoke from Potato Fires and Mikes of the Mountains). These works have in common simplicity of melodic line and harmonic treatment clear tonal grounding in each piece structure of form and central motifs; they are also a testimony of the composer's love for his native country and the Vysocina [Highlands] region. This edition is based in compliancewith the composer's wishes on the performance of the work by the Czech Choral Society. The sung text and forewords are printed in Czech English and German.

Winter Cantata / Vinterkantate (1976) by Per Nørgård for a variable ensemble of soloist mixed choir and instruments (minimum: vocalist and organ). Programme Note: When in 1975 I had finished composing my 3rd Symphony (begun in 1973) I wrote three simple melodies for two psalm texts by Ole Sarvig: ?The Year? and ?Choral Hymn?. These three tunes were derived from the same material as the second movement of the 3rd Symphony and could be harmonized together in several different tempo relationships at the same time - like fractals which inspired me to write several choral and instrumental works in the following decade based on thesemelodies: ?Frost Psalm? ?Winter Cantata? ? Winter Hymn? ?Cantica? and others. One of these ´Sarvig melodies´ is now included in the new Danish Hymnbook under the title ?Året?(The Year). Ole Sarvig´s poem ?Året? (The Year) is Danish perhaps Scandinavian in character but its symbolic atmosphere is global (now snow is covering the whole earth). The basic composition of this cantata based on Sarvig´s many verses was done by letting soloist choir and instruments change in feelings and moods: from the almost silent inward-looking beginning (I: Chorale dolorosa) to a dancelike and happy optimism (II: A heaven germ on winged foot thrust deep into the earth its root) followed by nightmarish tone rows as the ?year-wheel of fortune? is turning (III: Sacrifice The Year) and the temptations of the snake (IV: In Paradiso) to the allegorical fights between egoism and altruism (V:The Cycle Autumn. Purgatory) before the ?waiting for a disaster?- atmosphere at the end of this choral Odyssé. Winter Cantata was from the beginning (1976) designed as an open work to be arranged by different combinations of soloists choir and (different) instruments. Kantate Zum Epiphaniasfest. Par BACH JOHANN SEBASTIAN. This six-movement cantata uses the hymn of the same name by Ahasverus Fritsch, first recorded in 1698 in the Darmstädter Liederbuch. This places it amongst those chorale cantatas which use a hymn from the repertoire associated with Pietism. As was customary, the hymn text is retained in the outer movements, whereas the text for the inner movements - two secco recitatives and a tenor and a bass aria - are concerned with the contrast between the hostile world and the certainty of Jesus- the links between the cantata text and the Feast of the Epiphany are correspondingly tenuous. In the first movement the soprano sings the hymn melody complete, accompanied by mainly homophonic vocal parts, whilst the instrumental writing is largely influenced by the melody of the first line of the hymn. Remarkable is the tenor aria, with its contrasting central section and its chromatic twists and turns, in which Bach once again proves himself to be a master of harmony. The demands on the chorus are fairly modest, whereas the instrumentalists are challenged in the first movement and in both the arias./ Répertoire / Choeur Mixte (SATB) et Piano

The poignant choral begins on themorning of Christ's crucifixion comparing the Savior's beaten and bruised face with that of the swan and its darkened eyes. This dramatic text holds us in its grip as it portrays the suffering of Jesus and his crucifixion. Themusic and text evolve with great emotional sweeps of sound before fading away into a dirge-like epilogue. In these final measures we hear the last heartbeats of Christ fade away into the shadows. from Cantata No. 147-Johann Sebastian Bach is regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. His music is revered for its technical command artistic beauty and intellectual depth. This chorale movement is one of his most enduring works however the melody was originally composed before Bach’s time in 1642 by Johann Schop. Utilising the already existing melody Bach wrote this setting of Jesu Joy Of Man’s Desiring in 1716 as the 10th and last movement of the church cantata ‘Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben’ (BWV 147) one of the over three hundred cantatas written by the master of the Baroque period.This edition of the familiar melody which is often performed at weddings and Christian festive seasons like Christmas and Easter is arranged for SATB Chorus and Organ. All four verses of the lyrics are provided in English translation along with the original version in German.
