No group of works in Johann Sebastian Bach?s output is as wide-ranging as the cantatas. This is hardly surprisingconsidering that for over five years Bach was required to compose a work or at least re-work an existing one for every Sunday and festival of the church year as well as for numerous secular occasions such as council inaugurations school and university celebrations and royal birthdays. Unfortunately not all cantatas have survived. However over 200 sacred and secular works exist and form a corpus of works suitable for all possible occasions. This rich musical heritage is still as relevant today as it was then.

Górecki's Church Songs, based on melodies from Rev Jan Siedlecki's ?piewniki Ko?cielne ('church songbooks'), were composed in 1986. This edition is based on the PWM edition of 2013, which was produced with the assistance of Anna Górecka and Miko?aj Górecki. A special feature of the Boosey publications is the new, alternative Latin sung text by Edward Tambling, which will be attractive to the many choirs who do not wish to sing in Polish. The Latin text is carefully crafted to fit Górecki's score and is both poetic and sensitive to the devotional aspect of the songs. English translations from the Polish are also included, for reference only.The three publications present the songs for sacred use according to devotional subject-matter. In concert performances the songs, or a selection of them, may be performed in any order and combination. Vol 1 contains six songs in praise of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The seven songs in vol 2 take the themes of Good Friday, the Crucifixion, The Cross of Christ and the Resurrection. Originally released for male choir this revoicing evokes the mournfulness surrounding the crucifixion of Christ. Burchard's flowing lines in and out of alluring suspensions keeps us immersed in the sweet tension of the Latin text. But our struggles are beautifully rewarded as the piece quietly ends in the major tonality. A wonderful Lenten or Communion anthem for the advanced church choir or a concert piece for community or college choirs. Medium in difficulty.

This anthem is a setting of the text from John 14 Christ's words to his apostles after the resurrection. It begins with a flowing accompaniment and solo vocal lines that build to the tutti declamation of 'Peace I leave with you my peace I give you'. It is appropriate for Easter and Pentecost and is accessible for all church choirs.

The writing of a Requiem is a special challenge for any composer. The great Requiems of the past by composers such as Mozart Verdi and Berlioz interpret the sacred Requiem text literally offering prayers of salvation for the departed whose souls are assumed to be in purgatory facing a terrible judgement. Eternal Light: A Requiem by the award-winning British composer and internationally acclaimed broadcaster Howard Goodall is a stunning new requiem for the modern day. In contrast it is intended to provide solace to the grieving reflecting on the words of the Latin Mass by juxtaposing them withpoems in English. Speaking about the work Howard Goodall said 'For me a modern Requiem is one that acknowledges the unbearable loss and emptiness that accompanies the death of loved ones a loss that is not easily ameliorated with platitudes about the joy awaiting us in the afterlife. This like Brahms’ is a Requiem for the living addressing their suffering and endurance a Requiem focussing on the consequences of interrupted lives.” This piece of sheet music was commissioned by London Musici (Artistic Director: Mark Stephenson) to celebrate its 20th anniversary. It was commissioned as both a choral-orchestral-dance piece for London Musici The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral Oxford and Rambert Dance Company (Artistic Director: Mark Baldwin) and as a choral-orchestral work.

In a few short years Richard Burchard has become one of the most sought-after and commissioned composers for choral music. His choral writing is romantic and rich harmonically with dense contrapuntal lines. Now he has brought that excellence into an extended work on the Seven Last Words accompanied by divisi strings. This is a breath-taking work. A keyboard reduction for organ that can also accompany the work has been provided. It is a sacred piece that will also perform well in concert venues. Church community and college choirs will find this a worthy piece to program. Medium in difficulty.

Missa Aedis Christi combines powerful dramatic writing with a melodious charm that characterises Howard Goodall's choral music. A substantial work of moderate difficulty it will be found valuable for both church and concert use and has been arranged for SATB choir.

Choirs will enjoy singing the lush expanded harmonies in this short breathtaking anthem. The fourteenth-century text is used widely during communion but is also appropriate in other parts of the church's year especially during the season of Lent.

The Peace Of God from the series 'Hymns for a Changing World'. Optional harmony part in the chorus.Dedicated to St. Cairell. The Irish missionary St Cairell is thought to have left Iona c.600 AD. Along the route of his journey through the Highlands he established several centres of Christianity one such holy place being Cille Choirill in Brae Lochaber east of Roy Bridge.The highest knoll on this site is Tom Angeal (the Hill of the Angels) an ancient burial ground the final resting place of laity priests and bishops of Lochaber. According to local tradition the first recorded church on the site was built or restored by Ailean nan Creach afifteenth century Cameron chief in atonement for his violent life. Over the centuries the chapel fell into disrepair but in 1932 and again in 1991 it was restored and repaired thanks to the generous funding provided by the descendants of Lochaber people who emigrated to Nova Scotia at the end of the nineteenth century.

Within the culture of songs written for 'Complaints Choirs' the lyric material isdrawn from actual notes made by the residents of Folkestone about living in their town - its beauty its community spirit - and of course its drawbacks.It has been purposely written to be able to be rehearsed and performed on aminimum ofrehearsal time as the logistics of large-scale community events means that the singers andmusicians often come together only on the day of performance.The accompanying instrumental parts are straightforward the role ofthe saxophone line being tosupport the vocal line most of the time.
