Christmas Guitar Book

Duets For Two Acoustic Guitars-The Christmas season has always been special to me. It is a season that has crystallized the hopes aspirations and faith of millions of people through the centuries. The amount of music written for Christmas is monumental.This book contains 14 scores from my Christmas Guitar Portraits recording. I selected various genres dear to me.First there are selections from the early American sacred song tradition. The Babe of Bethlehem Cherry Tree Carol A Star in the East The Shepherd's Star A Virgin Unspotted and I Wonder As I Wander all are from this rich heritage.I also picked a number of carols from theOld English genre. Away In The Manger Green Grow'th the Holly and What Child is This are included.Then there are the Christmas favourites. In the Bleak Mid-winter and a medley ofBaloo Lammy; The First Noel and Silent Night make any Christmas complete. Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence is one of my favourite Advent hymns. Gaudete Christus est natus is arousing carol dating back many centuries.Finally I included two originals. Lullay My Liking is an ancient carol text. Many composers over the centuries have written melodies to these lyrics most notably GustavHolst. I could not resist the temptation so the melody here is original. Finally Christmas Prayer is a new composition. I have always wanted to compose and arrange music designed to bring the Plectrum or Flatpick Guitarto the concert stage. These arrangements were written with that in mind.

The music selected for this book seems to lift you gently back to by-gone days to an era more leisurely paced than our own. This collection for solo classic guitar focuses first and foremost on early Christmas music and isenhanced by appropriate cover art biblical text and poetry dating from this exciting period. The selections are festive to listen to while providing arrangements ranging from the traditional 'easier to learn' lute solos to moreadvanced settings with today's harmonies. Each piece is cloaked in the special beauty and warmth that is characteristic of the guitar. A 'mix and match' approach in the arrangements provides an added dimension for your enjoyment.For example What Child is This/Greensleeves begins with an olden lute version followed by interludes that segue into other sections. Seven of the eight pieces in the book are recorded on the accompanying CD for your listeningpleasure and to guide you in interpreting the pieces. Written in standard notation only.

These transcriptions were notated in standard notation and tablature and are meant to be performed with a pick, or using hybrid picking. Even though a few of the pieces may be played on a standard guitar, the others require an electric guitar or a guitar with a cutaway. The recording features performances of all of the music in the book with anywhere from one to as many as eight guitars sounding simultaneously. The last four tracks of the CD feature certain previous tracks with the first guitar omitted. By using these tracks as accompaniment one can practice or perform with the CD.
