Par ARMAN HOWARD. Howard Arman, director of the Bavarian Radio Choir, has been actively engaged with international Christmas carols through various Christmas-related CD productions of his choir in the past years. This has resulted in a number of original arrangements for four- to eight-part mixed choir a cappella, shedding new light on well-known classics such as O du fröhliche [O, you joyful], Stille Nacht [Silent Night] and Lasst uns froh und munter sein [Let us be happy and cheerful]. The first volume includes five Christmas carols from the German-speaking regions. They range from simple but harmonically intriguing settings such as Lieb Nachtigall, wach auf [Dear nightingale, wake up] to eight-part sound paintings with bell-like chimes as in O du fröhliche and classical double choir settings such as Resonet in laudibus . The second volume includes five Christmas spirituals with English texts, forming a contrast to the solemn and festive character of the first. The choir can prove its swing and jazz qualities here; the stirring arrangements are a gain for classical Christmas concerts, too. Following the tradition of the spiritual, some settings also require soloists, which can, however, also be recruited from the choir if adequate singers are available. The first piece combines the spirituals It?s a Birthday and Wasn?t That a Mighty Day to form a medley, Ain?t That a Rockin? gives a moment of tranquility before the likewise rousing spirituals Mary Had a Baby and Little David conclude the volume. Vocalise-Will Todd born in 1970 is forging a strong reputation for himself as a composer who is equally at ease in opera oratorio church music and jazz. His style is instantly accessible and lastingly memorable. He spent his formative years steeped in both jazz and the English choral tradition so in his choral music he is able to juxtapose strong rhythmic drive and rich harmonies with exquisitely lyrical vocal lines.'Angel Song II' is inspired by the idea of angels singing on Christmas night. The music weaves a gentle melody over the aleatoric textures of the accompanying voices. The text is designed to create the echo of the word 'Hosanna' butwith no consonants so that the music feels as if it comes from 'on high'.'

In recent years he adopted an increasingly tonal idiom. He was knighted for Services to Music in 1998.

This interesting new take on the classic carol Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day by Swiss composer Carl Rütti formed one-third of a trio of carols that reinvigorated the old favourites with fresh and interesting musical elements. The Three Carols medley was initiated in 1996 with My Dancing Day?forming the Presto section. Carl Rütti's work blends the English choral tradition with other genres such as jazz and blues. His work defies expectations and as such this would make a great piece to perform for choirs who are perhaps tired of the traditional Christmas choral works and want to inject some freshmusical vigour into their festive repertoire. In the September 2015 issue of Organists' Review Michael Overbury writes that this piece is 'immediately accessible with typically spicy chromatic inflections.'
