This volume presents 64 Pastorale compositions for organ (harpsichord/pianoforte) of the 18th century from Germany, Bohemia, Austria and South Tyrol. Charming melodies shaped by natural notes, bordoun basses, a lyrical-cheerful or sensitive tone - these are some of the common characteristics of the works in this collection. Several of them are connected to the custom of the Kindlwiegen or cradle song. Those in search of new discoveries will also find a number of first editions here. Almost all of the pieces can be played manualiter and range from easy to moderate level of difficulty. Together, both Pastorale volumes display an impressive kaleidoscope of the different national characteristics of the pastorale and offer a rich repertoire for organists, not only at Christmas time.

Johann Samuel Beyer (1669-1744) assumed the position of Kantor at St. Mary's Cathedral in Freiberg (Saxony) in 1699. Between 1716 and 1719 his Musicalische Vorrath (Musical source), a comprehensive collection of two-part chorale variations for organ or other keyboard instruments was published. The selection in the present volume offers an attractive enrichment for organists of liturgical repertoire for Advent, Christmas and Epiphany. An optional figured bass realization for the bass line has been added in small print. Clearly, practiced organists can shape and elaborate these pieces by means of improvisation.

A CHRISTMAS VIGIL is the second of two Hailstork organ works composed as variations on the British hymn tune Dundee. The present work begins with a carillon-like ostinato on the hymn’s opening phrase, which returns joyously toward the end of the composition. While the hymn itself is not specific to Nativity, the composer gave this work a Christmas title due to its bell-like cheer.A CHRISTMAS VIGIL is based on a larger single-movement piece written for the First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach, Virginia. That earlier work, A Dundee Fantasy, was commissioned to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the church. That major concert piece, based on the hymn tune Dundee, was premiered by Alan Morrison.Several small units left over from drafts of A Dundee Fantasee suggested Christmas to me because of the carillon-style ostinato at the beginning that returns grandly at the end. The joyous momentum throughout the whole composition makes this vigil suitable for a Christmas Season concert.
